10 Survival tips for 0.0

A Rough Guide to 0.0 and alliances and other stories.

#1. Don't fly what you can't afford to lose
This is doubly, triply, multiply important out here. Especially to begin with,
whilst you are getting the lay of the land, making friends and enemies in local, and learning where to avoid, i'd advise you stick to frigates / afs / inties / light (fast!) cruisers. For us minnies this means rifters, stabbers and jag/claw stuff.

#2. Spare Parts
Build up a stock of parts in the home station out here, and another set in Stacmon. It's extremely annoying to get blown up at the start of an op, and then have to spend the next 2 hours re-fitting a ship, only to have it happen again.

#3 Scan, Scan, watch local and Scan again
Figure outhow to use your ship scanner (no, not scan probes, just the scanner). Never ever ever warp to anything without scanning it first. Moons will have pos' at them with guns, that will blow up your shiny ship before you can get out of range.

Gates Will have hostile camps. Stations will be surrounded by bad people... blah blah. Also, keep local in a seperate window pinned to the side of your screen, and scan it for hostiles / friends regularly. If you are in a gang, make sure one person at least is on local watch.

#4. Scouts
If you are moving anything important or high value, eg any ship worth more than a mil.. even if it's just a battleship to do some high-impact ratting / mining, make sure you have someone with you in a faster ship to check gates / routes for gatecamps, systems for clusters of hostiles, and otehr shit like that. Finding a dread with support camping a gate is quite annoying.

There are no sentry guns out here - so they (we?) can happily put Warp interdiction spheres on gates, adn blow up people coming through them. Your scout should be able to get out of a bubble and either free, or back through the gate, but your fancy BS is DEAD.

#5. Propulsion
Fit a Microwarp Drive. Always.

#6. Tackling & eWar
As we are flying small ships, our main job is goig nto be to 'tackle' enemies. Eg get in fast & close, slap some warp scrambling on them (known as points. eg ts says "2 poits on him" then he's already scrambled, save your cap and pewpew) try to keep the enemy held down until backup arrives.

Primary tools: 7.5km or 20km Warp scramblers 7.5km use less cap, and scram for 2 points not 1, but are much shorter range....

Secondary tools: Webbers. Hold things in place. Not as essential if youa re going well fast, but handy for killing small fast stuff. These have a 10km range (ish) so if you are small and fast, you want to try to stay out of web range.

Tertiary tools: Sensor boosters; remote sensor dampners; tracking disruptors; ecm; $random.

It's nice to have a pack running a good mix of secondary and tertiary stuff. see what you like and roll with it. a enemy that takes 2 mins to lock you, has 3km locking range, and has 0 gun trackign is not going to be too dangerous

Get on the Agony PvP course. NOW. This includes you Taaii / Grav / Tia :)

#7. Tactical Bookmarks
Spend some time setting up a bunch of bookmarks in systems. Between moons, off plane, anywhere weird and odd basically. also, set up station-exit marks incase the station is camped. A godo way to get nice off-grid bookmarks is to run missions out in 0.0.... Hunt around for agents you can work for. The base has a L4 Q3 Quafe Combat agent :)

howto: when the station's not camped....)take 1 fast ship with good cap. Exit the station, point a little way down, or up, torch up that MWD and fly out a couple of thousand km. This takes a while. Bookmark the spot where you get bored. Then when you un-dock in future, you are aligned and at speed to warp away, thus busting camps.

#8. Die.
You'll die. It's fun, take it like a man. Eg go and get some friends and kill them right back IN THE FACE. Get out there, engage shit, start fights, join gangs, pewpew learn, and Die Smiling.

#9. Clone Stuff
Set your medical clone home to be Stacmon, or gekutami, or somewhere else entirely.

Having it in deep 0.0 is bad. and remember to update it when you get podded. If possible, only bring a jumpclone over to the 0.0 station, and leave one at the PoS / HQ in Gekutami so you can jump back and forth, do research, npc / mission for money, etc. I have 3. 1 in my mission space with pimp mission gear, 1 at corp HQ with a few assets, and 1 on it's way to base.

#10. Don't fly what you can't afford to lose
Ever. :)

I'm not sure I get the scanner article you linked to. If I use my scanners I don't get a graphical representation of it like the article talks about. I just get a list. I hit the scanner button on the ship control area (ctrl-f11 hotkey), then I get a window with three tabs - System scanner, Directional scan and moon analysis. The first one doesn't seem to do anything, I assume I need probes to use it. the second one looks to be the useful one, I can put in a range and a scan angle and it returns a list of all the things within range. Most of the results don't have distances listed though so I'm not sure how useful it is. There's no little map as the guide suggests. I tried using in in combination with the system map but that didn't seem to do a lot either.

Basically when you undock and warp away, you lose a few seconds while your ship aligns to the direction you're warping to. This is long enough for bad people to lock you down and pop you. If you set destination to a bookmark that's in a straight line to the direction you undock from, you can undock then hit the autopilot button so you will warp immediately and can get away from a sticky situation much faster. Once at your safe bookmark you can then warp to wherever it was that you really wanted to go.

no, for some godforsaken reason they changed it so you just now get teh 'in-range' stuff.

if you press F11 you will seee bottom-right a little mini-system map with some info in it, but it's not as awesome as it used to be.

Doesn't show rats either :(
