Right then, white undercoat for me then or is a light undercoat not such a hot idea ? And are different coloured bases allowed in more strict games ? I got an invite to a "Veterans club" nearby, I said I'd never played before, but I'd be allowed in simply because I have a beard I think

Colored bases are fine IMO. Has no impact on gameplay, so so long as it looks reasonable not a problem I'd say.
