Arkham Asylum

Played this over the weekend with Cadfiel and a couple of questions

1) How long does a game normally last ?
2) How do you go about actually winning ?

I got the distinct feeling that one game could have taken about 2 days to complete as you fight to get enough clue tokens to seal the portals as closing them any other way seems to be a total waste of time.

Well infact I guess the game would have lasted till we got to terror level 10, which seemed a done deal as you can never close portals fast enough.

I'm thinking I'm missing something but from the game I can't see what all the fuss is about

lasts a couple of hours generally.
3 ways it goes:
you dont close enough gates = too many monsters from surges, and just too many gates open. you lose through terror getting to 10 or too many gates.
you close gates, but dont seal them = more open, and you lose to doom track.
you seal gates, mostly using clues, and the occasional elder-sign.

it works best with about 4 people i think. 3 is doable. 2 is... well, i'm convinced we could manage it with a lot of luck, but in general no. and 1 is more or less suicide.

also, guessing you mean arkham horror, as arkham asylum is the batman game iirc :p

Not grumpy
mind you a couple of hours does still seem unlikely while we are learning the rules.

I did enjoy the game and would want to play again but with us playing 2 each.

Ooops yeah Arkham Horror, I think with 4-6 it would be enjoyable, but easier, just seems odd that a game sold as 2-6 players appears basically nigh on impossible for 2 players, and I'd guess much easier for 6.

And I know how you win as per the rules, I was talking more the tactics, i.e I guess conserving clue token or some way of getting extra ones so as to seal the portals. If the answer is more players I think it'll go the way of e-bay :)

Well, you need to remember to use shops and stuff too (buying elder signs if you can get the cash together to...), and getting used to which locations can give clues from events helps too.

Can you buy specific things in the shops, like elder signs ? flicking through the cards there are only 4 elder cards in a fairly large deck, I think we only used shops twice in the whole game, and I guess you need to use them early cos we ended up with most closed as the terror level kept going up :)

Arkham Horror is a top game, especially with the expansions :)
I have played this several times, and think 4 is the optimum number of investigators. I find a game lasts 2-3 hours, and the key is communicating and sharing things while making use of resource gathering locations. If you're short of something, eg money where the $ sign inicates a location where the probability of gaining money is higher. Similarly for magic/unique items, common items and so on.
There is some luck involved, such as gates not spawning where an elder sign has been placed. Also the choice of Great Old One has an effect.

You can, but you get a choice of 1 from 3 in the 3 shop locations. Make sure you use them!

And movement isnt' mandatory is it ? curious as the character I had, you could set movement to 0 (and sneak to 5), while Cad's had a minimum movement of 1.
