I use the free AVG virus scanner, it always worked fine but for some reason now it will not download the updates anymore. I'm sure it has worked a couple of times since I changed to broadband (although i can't be sure). I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it early but it still won't download the updates, any ideas?

I use AVG too, and uploaded new patch just last week, no probs...

Right click on the mini icon in the task bar and open the AVG control centre, go to update manger tab and try changing your "download from server" option to "free.grisoft.cz" (no speech marks)

That's my setting and it works fine.

For interest my latest virus database is "385" relesed on "01/03/2004" so check yours, it may already be up to date.

Here's a screenie of the three main pages of the AVG control centre on my machine, try setting your pages to match. (sorry they're greyscale and heavilly cropped, but file was too big otherwise)

Thanks, but I finally managed to get it to work, the 'update now' button shown in your picture just wouldn't work for me, so I set the scheduled updates to start within a couple of minutes, it kicked in and downloaded the latest update, very odd.
So I've set that to check for and download any new updates every 2 days.

Oh and by the way the latest update was "398" release date today, if you want to update yourself.

As you are on broadband I would set it to update every day Janie, if not more than once a day ... when these virus' start to spread you need the fix within hours of them being released.

I know recently at work our scanner wasn't updated for 3 hours, and in that time a new virus hit ... the main AV server has now been set to check for updates every second! And each terminal every hour.

the downside to setting your av systems to update every second and every hour in a corp network are the increased amount of internet traffic you generate.

However as Bertyr says these days you have to have a system that checks regularly or else your going to get hit during that update window.

We (my company) are working on some new technology that when complete should defeat 98% of virus inc new ones without an update ;-) So far from what ive seen it rocks.....

so you have found a way to hold the emails back for 3 hours whilst the server checks for virus updates ?

Or just made every one use agent as their email client, or unix ?
