What is it with Vampires? They seem to be turning up in every Novel or Series I read at the minute. Come on authors I'm bored of variants of bloodsuckers have some originality please.

A series of books I really enjoyed recently was the Abhorsen trilogy by Garth Nix. It is aimed at kids but it is well written and there's a very cool take on magic and necromancy. Books are Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen in that order.

If that doesn't float your boat then I'd recommend Player of Games, Inversions or Feersum Endjinn by Iain M. banks. They are SF but with a fantasy twist to most of them and aren't the 'hard SF' style of his other stuff. I know you don't like SF normally (being from Norfolk and therefore afraid of technology) but these are very original.

Recently I've been reading a lot of Black Library stuff (work paying for books = win) the quality is patchy and there is a heavy price to be paid in nerd points but some of them are real gems in the rough.

I read Player of Games a few months ago. It's was perfectly readable but was left abit 'was that it?' at the end.

garth nix's abhorsen series is w00t on paper. have you read any of his otehr work? i'm nervous about it so have avoided it. also, not ebing a 13 year old girl, i'm slightly dsiturbed as to how much fun it was to read, and don't want any more gender confusion.

janie: Yup, that's banks for you. If you enjoyed tpoG, i can't reccomend excession highly enough, or the algebraist. each of them are among his finest work.

The only other Garth Nix book I've read is Ragwitch which you can safely miss. It's aimed at a much younger target audience and isn't nearly as good as Abhorsen.

Excession is one of my favourite books ever. I've read it about 6 times now and each time I still find new plot twists I missed before. Definitely a book that rewards rereading which is a very rare thing these days.

Vampireses iz gud!!

I've been really impressed by Sergei Lukyanenko's trilogy of The Night Watch, The Day Watch and The Twilight Watch.

Twisty turny plots, credible and interesting characters, mages and werewolves and vampires all with novel twists. Me likes. What really engaged me was how the 'good' guys, in trying to manipulate things for the greater good of all, are far more meddling and scheming and interventional than the 'bad' guys who ironically were pretty much the only ones telling the truth all the time.

Great plot, great characters and a novel take on good/evil and light/dark. So it's got vampires in it, but what's not to like?
