Current Ladder:

CUK Name - Skype Name

Simmo - ?
Kelger - ?
Medivac - ?
Agravaine - ?
Zeus - ?
Requiel - n/a
Entropy - ?
Angelissa ?
Chick ?
Tieger - Tieger ? (I think)
Cadfiel - Cadfiel
MarkS - n/a
Rorschach - n/a
Gottaa - you_looking

If people can post on this if they want to join the ladder and then I'll add people in above me (i.e I'll start at the bottom). For the moment what we're going to be using is

Apprentice
and
Skype

Rules:
Core Rulebook (PDF)
Comprehensive Competition Rules (Word Format)

Once people have posted up and the ladder has a few people in it, to challenge someone just drop them a PM, arrange a time and have a game, make sure you both know if it's a ladder game or a casual game and we're away. There seem to be a few different ways of running a ladder but I'm gonna have a look around today and decide what we will use and edit this post.

Game on !

Okay, this is a rough guide on getting started in Magic the Gathering online.

Step 1 Download Apprentice from the link above, and install
Step 1.1 Open port 4747 if you use a router and forward it to your machine.
Step 2 (useful, not required) Download Skype from the link above and install and create an account (which is free)
Step 3 Launch Apprentice
Step 4 Click Options -> Set Name and type in your name, be it name, CUK forum name or anything else you want
Step 5 Click File -> Sealed Deck Generator, add 2 starter decks (9E - 9th Edition), and 1 Land pack (to ensure everyone has enough land to make whatever deck they want. Now add 2 booster decks of your choice, these should be the what would be a normal booster deck, but not one of the normal decks, i.e IA - Ice Age, but not the full decks such as 8e - 8th Edition. Put in a minimum card number of 60 and click Generate. What this will do is make a random deck from the 2 9th Edition, 1 land and 2 booster packs, this deck will have 60 cards in it and all the other cards will be on the sideboard.

At this stage you will have around 170 cards in your library, and this will have 60 cards in your deck and the rest will be on your sideboard.

If you then click New Game, and then Sideboard you will see you can move cards from your deck to your sideboard in a trade style system. If you close that window you also should see the Deck Editor button, this lauches a Deck Editor, in here you can click on a card in your library and then click on sideboard a number of times to move the cards from your deck to your sideboard, then you need to delete them from your deck. It's not the best system but it's what there is, you can see you can also click on a card from the full list of cards an add it into your library, while you can do this, I'd rather people didn't so we didn't end up moving into power decks and just played the more casual and fun game. The only thing which may be worth allowing people to take duel colour lands if they drop 1 land from each they have already (i.e get a red or white land to replace 1 red and 1 white). It is probably worth working with the cards you have as opposed to just playing a random game in the long run, but I'll be changing my deck around with what's in my sideboard as I go.

There could be a better way of sorting the decks out but I don't know what it is just yet

Anyway that's gone on longer than I wanted, play, have fun, and if in doubt ask someone who's played a little before and they will help you start.

Now you're working you should go and buy one then :)

Much easier being able to talk about stuff (certainly for me as I always close the chat window in Apprentice cos it's a tiny font for me which is painful after a while to read. Also means you can turn off those annoying beeps that otherwise happen with every action/phase change

/me much prefers ventrillo... :p
suppose i can install skype as well. can sit there being hardly ever used like Teamspeak :p

not sure i understood what your saying about switching cards. Are you saying we're free to swap cards between deck and sideboard, but not to just add in additional l33t cards that arnt part of the sideboard? (maybe it would make more sense to me if i had the program to try it on, but i'm at work and i dont think theyd like me installing it :p)

That's exactly what I was trying to say but did a really bad job of saying :)

You can use the 170 odd cards you'll get swapping in an out what you want, but no taking of the l33t cards of pwn'ing

kk :)
i was a bit confused by the fact that it actually *generates* a random deck from our 170 in the first place, if we can just swap others in anyway :p

PC's just so unclear, despite clear instructions on the first and second post MarkS is still floundering :p

you want an iBook you do :)

On a more serious type note, read the first post, then the second should explain it a little more, then organise a game with someone who can show you how things work and get you into the geeky world of Magic The Gathering card game :)

Costs nothing though, and no need to go into seedy shops unless that's really your thing.
