Trying to remember a set of books based around a regiment of civil war soldiers who are transported to another world in a balloon, the world is inhabited by a race that uses humans as cattle/ food, book 2 has an Ironclad appearing andf the humans fighing back....
Any idea's anyone, or was it just a cool dream

Deffo a set of at least 3 books, read them in the late 80's I think, Worm hole takes them to another world filled with Lizard? peeps, bloody hard googling a memory but I keep trying lol, one book might be called Ironclad ... or something like that lol
To be fair the thing that jogged my memory was John Carter. well the first minute lol

I liked the Harry Tutlrdove series about a Roman legion being transported to a fantasy land too.

There are others in this theme I think, such as a battleship being transported back in time too.

I remember one about a Jeep with 4 marines in it getting hit by a shell and ending up in some fantasy land, using the mounted gun on the jeep as magic etc - mind it was poorly written, pulp shite

Mary Gentle's Grunt's is about Orcs getting Marine weapons to fight against the light, an excellent quote in it is, " Pass me another Elf, this ones split...." Tis a good book
