Ok next newbie question, i was looking at drones. Ive found a ship i can afford and it has a small drone bay, 5m3 so i was thinking of getting the skills for drones then mining drones, if i did that, could the dones mine for me, ie could i do without a mining laser and let them do the work?

Even with lots of skills (alot of time) drones won't pull in as much as lasers could. Well they might actually if you never trained lasers but you only have to train mining IV (about 1 day skill time) to get a 20% bonus to laser yield and have access to T2 mining lasers.
Also a 5m3 drone bay will only hold 1 drone. You need a 25m3 drone bay to use the max amount of drones the game allows (5 x 5m3). Drones vary in size but mining drones are 5m3 size.
If you want to mine, a good, cheap ship to use is an osprey. Its a caldari cruiser with ship boni to mining yield. You will have to learn about jet can mining to mine effectively with that. This is where you jetison your ore you mined and use the jettisoned can to fill up. Once its full, you bring in a hauler such as a Badger if your caldari and keep filling up your hold untill the can is empty.
If you want some better cash, train up to badger II and train the skill to use cargo expanders, hull upgrades II i think, and bring your ship over when we mine. We could always use another hauler :D

Ignore can mining if you are still on a trial and on your own as you won't be able to train haulier skills. And as Tai says the mining drones aren't great but what I used to do was bring combat drones and a full array of mining lasers, the drones took out the pirates while I just mined. This was though in 0.6 space and I don't think it would have worked if a PC pirate had turned up while I was in that configuration.

And while mining drones don't do much, they do help speed things along, though only really when can mining would it be noticeable

Another good thing about drones, is that you can swap them in and out as needed (if you have a large enough drone bay). You can use mining drones, then swap to combat ship when you see enemies.

Probably worth setting up a channel so peeps can talk to each other and get help/ideas when they need it.

Made a character called Septian Dracon.. the other Septian is me too, but thats on the other nontrial account, which i cant activate atm :)
