F1 vs. Toca

Well I watched F1 on Sunday, and was bored till I just decided to play Forza instead. Any motorsport fans out there recommend a good place/channel to watch Toca on (I have Sky HD), I'm not going to try. Doesn't even have to be Toca, just something which is more fun, but not as exciting as quad-bike racing which while I enjoy I struggle to follow properly.

heard a lot of people complaining about the f1 this weekend :( might as well just be a set of time trials with noone else on the track now...

All these rules just made what was already abit bad, much much worse, they even said in pre-season stuff the new defusers made it harder to overtake, which I though is the opposite of what they were trying to do, you'd have more fun watching any of the pre-f1 series, formula ford for example.

One thing that didn't help was the camera's, at points they would be talking about action while all you saw was what looked like a precession(sp) lap, if there is action SHOW IT !

DTM (German Touring Cars) and V8 Supercars (Australian NASCAR type racing but on real tracks) are both pretty awesome race series and should be on most satellite autosport channels.

The double defusers was the talking point at the start of the last season, the Brawn team and a couple of others turned upto the first race with it and had a large margin in preformance over the other teams (hence why Jenson won 6 or the first 7 races and pretty much won the title in that run). The other teams tried to get it banned, saying it was against the regulations laid down in the pre season - however the FIA said it was legal and all the other teams added a double defuser to there car during the course of the season, and they are again legal this season. Appariently the Double defuser adds a huge amount of downforce and enhances the areo-package to the point where it is very hard for the car following to get close enough (due to 'dirty' air) to pass, despict a speed advantage. Next season the double defuser will be banned.

Of course this was not the only part of why yesterdays GP sucked. The new rules laid down by the FIA in regards to no refuelling and engine and gearbox restrictions meant drivers were unable to drive at the cars full protential race long - because they were having to conserve so many things. Also without fueling it takes away one tactical aspect as all the cars will be equal all race long.

Overall the new rules are stupid and when you hear drivers (Jenson, Lewis and Shumacher) admitting they weren't going at maximun speed in a race you know something needs looking at. It's a shame because the last couple of seasons have been fine, so why fix something that ain't broken.

F1 for me has been losing it's sheen for a while but I've stuck with it, but after yesterday I'm not sure I'll even stick with it

Hmm, need to find the autosport channels in Sky, doubt they will be HD though, the more I try and get into HD the more I find what I want to watch isn't in HD :/

Anyway, I'll have a look out for DTM and Autocars.

No refuelling is a good thing. Races should be won on the track not in the pits.

Races are generally won by the team who turns up with the best car at the start of the season, and later on by which team makes the best strids in the development race. The idea that the race is purely down to the best drivers on the track on a given day in F1 is alittle naive. Refuelling added a element of interest in which different drivers would be on different stratagies and faster and slower at different parts of the race based on there fuel level. With everyone running the same fuel level though quali and the race all you get is the fast cars up front and the slower ones at the back and the race follows that pattern and you get races like yesterday.

Also the only 2 real overtakes up front yesterday (aside from Vettel, in his underpower car) were Button passing Webber and Hamliton passing Rosberg - both of these passes were done in the pits not on the track.

There was something started wasn't there where all the cars/fuel/tyres were identical, so it was down to driver skill ?

I don't really disagree with that but in the past few seasons there's been almost no overtaking on the track as the track positions have always changed during the refuelling stops and the drivers know that they just need to hang out for another few laps until the guy in front comes in for juice.

Almost every race-winner was already leading after the last pitstop because that's when the track position was finalised. Even the 'bad old days' of turbo and non-turbo cars in the same race, there was a whole lot more actual racing going on, epic duels between the likes of Senna, Prost, Mansell and Picquet. Now it just seems as though the constructors are taking it in turns to dominate for a season. Overtaking is harder yes, due to the double diffusers and other aerodynamic tweaks but mostly the sport has devolved from being a battle on the track to being a bluffing game of pit-stop strategies.

I don't think there's that much difference between the cars - not to the extent that anyone who's not the current top dog cannot compete at any rate. all of the top tier teams are throwing roughly the same amount of money at the cars and most of them have major manufacturers providing R&D support on top of that. Apart from circuits like Monaco where the team who's car falls apart last wins, I think that any of the competitive teams can turn up to pretty much any race and expect to come home with a trophy. That's not happening because the rules favour the car in front far too much.

I agree. But as a general rule I think the past 3 or 4 seasons have been quite exciting in terms of the closeness of the racing, the fairly varied numbers of winners during the course of the season and the drivers championship has generally gone down to the wire. It was certainly an improvement over the Schumacher dominated years and alot of the early 90's seasons where Mansell and Prost (his last championship) won championships by dominating nearly every race.
It seemed they were starting to get things sorted, but yesterday seemed a massive backwards step. It may have been an unfortuantly dull race, you always get them, but to me it seemed the new rules contributed heavily to the precession we got.

Yeah NASCAR is hard to get to grips with it has required taste. But sometimes it can be exciting.

But I use to love World Superbikes in the days of fogerty.

Caught some go-kart racing on some channel we already get at the weekend, now that's fun to watch, lots of action, a crazy commentator and it only seemed to be the dads of the kids racing that were taking it seriously
