If you enjoy The Malazan Book of the Fallen you should also try the companion series written by Ian Cameron Esslemont, the first is out now and is called Night of Knives and the second is out later this year and is called Return of the Crimson Guard. Esslemont co-created the world featured in both series for a RPG setting the were running so both he and Steven Erikson are working of the same material.

I just have to say, that I'm glad Tree & Readon mentioned Steven Erikson and the mazlan series. I'm halfway through the 3rd book, Memories of Ice and it's been a while since I've wanted to disappear each night early to bed just to read a series :D

Great series, great writing and the first book can seem a bit daunting at first with the zillions of characters, but it all fits together very nicely as the books go on.

Requiel

PVC Love God
Matter by Iain M Banks. Yeah it's technically a sci-fi novel but really it's a fantasy novel.

Just finished reading it and it's ace. Not as good as Excession but easily better than Player of Games or Use of Weapons.

There's currently 12 or 13 books in the Wheel of Time series and now Jordan is dead, his friend is doing the last one.

I like the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind.

I really liked the Wheel of Time but only the first few books, the latter ones seemed to just drag and lose the plot. No idea if the series picks up again but I'm a bit reluctant to buy them on a "chance". Anybody who's up to date care to rate the last few?

But yes, I can't recommend RR Martin enough.
Oh and yes, Trudi Canavan. Black Magician is A+, First 3 of Age of the Five are only "B" but the final 3 are back on form.

I liked the later books but they weren't anywhere near as good as the early ones.

From memory, I think he hit a purple patch with books 2-6.

I admit to being easy pleased but my friend foisted Fiona McIntosh's 'Quickening' trilogy starts with Myrrens Gift, been devouring my way through them. Not too girly as far as I can tell. :)

Shadowfall and the followon Hinterland by James Clemens is worth a read as are The Summoner and Blood King by Gail Z Martin.

Both series I couldnt put down and I know the summoner series has a 3rd on the way (though each book are complete stories in their own right).

ooh, is blood king the sequel to summoner? read summoner a while ago (i want to say a year or so, but that might be a lie), and been waiting for the sequels to get written.

Thread Resurrection!

Since I liked the Game of Thrones TV series I started reading the books, I've just got to the end of A Feast for Crows and the last chapter says 'new book due next year, don't worry, and is dated 2005 :)

It's out next wednesday as luck would have it, but I'd be pissed off if I'd had to wait 6 years for the bastard to come out!!

Kelger

Sexy?
lol, yeah, I stopped reading series till they're complete now after having to wait forever with both GRR Martin and Robert Jordan :)

Your opinion is worthless....
David Gemmell - apart from Tolkien this guy's the daddy, read all of his books.. RIP
Guy Gavriel Kay - great writer.
Conn Iggulden - new author to me but brilliant so far
Tad Williams - brilliant, does cyberpunk & fantasy

Gemmell is my favourite author, I know he tends to write the same book over and over, but hey ho. I think the Troy series of books would make an excellent TV series if it had the same production values as GoT.

Have now started Steven Erikson Malazon Book of the Fallen (on second book) due to my neighbour loaning me :) Quite enjoying having to pay attention rather then just devouring! Can see me buying them, especially with that handy list on this thread :)

Just finished Elizabeth Moon's The Deeds of Paksennarion which was ok and about how a mercenary soldier becomes a paladin.

About to start reading Brandon Sanderson's The Way of Kings next (I liked what he did with the Wheel of Time so far)

I've been taken by Ben Aaronovitch's two novels, "Rivers of London" and "Moon over Soho" which are interesting takes of mystery/police genres set in modern day London, where there're supernatural creatures and magic. Sounds lame but is well written, interesting, well paced, interesting characters and really works.
