The game story is revealed in the end mission cinematics. It can be a bit convoluted.
I have found a decent thread with two descriptions of the storyline here.
Apparently you can get a bit lost storywise in the Maguuma (Wilds) area if you do certain quests before doing the Bloodstone Fen mission. So it might be worth working up to this mission and then mopping up quests afterwards.
