Guide - Security Rating

Some of you have now been to low-sec. and had a taste of life out there. So its probably time to discuss Player Security Ratings and the effect on System Security Access.

Every Player has a Security Rating, this rating has an effect on how the Empires and therefore Concord will react to them. A lot of Players also use this to attempt to acsertain how that Player will behave. Personally I think that is a mistake but I'll get to that later.

Player Sec. Ratings can be anywhere between 10 and -10. It is much harder to improve your rating than it is to lose it. Once a Player drops below -5 they are considered an outlaw. Outlaws can be fired upon by anyone in the game without taking a Security Rating loss to themselves in the process, anywhere in game.

Firing on a Player with a negative higher than -5 will result in you taking a hit to to your own rating. That is something you need to be aware of.

Targeting another Player will not be considered an aggressive act by Concord. If you are targeted, do NOT open fire. You are being tricked and Concord will now assist your opponent in killing your ship. Once they have fired then you can defend yourself and Concord will be helping you.

There are some exceptions to this depending on the Security rating of the System you are in.

1.0 - 0.5 = High Sec. Empire.
0.4 - 0.1 = Low Sec. Empire.
0.0 = Alliance controlled or lawless space.

So, firing on another player, station or law abiding NPC (white on the overview) in high sec. will bring Concord warping to your destination where upon your ship will be destroyed. If you warp out in time, they will follow you. If you warp to a gate or station the sentry guns will destroy your ship.

People have tested running around the system to avoid Concord, I have never heard of anyone surviving. If someone claimed they did, I would not believe them anyway, I have seen how quickly it all happens on several occasions.

Firing on the same tagets as above in low sec will not bring Concord to you. If you are at a gate or station, the sentry guns will fire at you. You will have to stay away from anywhere with sentry guns until the Concord countdown has expired on you. This time is unknown to me as different people have tested and come up with different times, but it is certainly no longer than 30 minutes. So as you can see, low sec allows for piracy but you will still take that security hit to your status.

Alliance space and lawless space is completely different. Concord have no authority there at all. Alliances police their own space to varying degree's of success and lawless space speaks for itself. No action will affect your sec. rating in any way.

Concord never pod Players.

OK, I mentioned earlier that using a players sec. rating to guess how they behave is, in my opinion, a mistake. This is something I did myself time and again for far too long. The trouble with doing that is you just don't know what they are thinking.

They may have just decided that after several months of being the good citizen, that life as a pirate might actually be more fun after all. Then you show up just at the wrong moment. Also they may keep their piracy to a minimum and spend the rest of the week doing missions and belt ratting to get the rating back up a bit again. Leto had an alt which he used for precisely this purpose for a while so that he could clear his home system of macro miners.

So what does this all really mean?

Well, your sec. rating determines where on the map you are allowed to go.
As your rating drops, so does the systems you can access. If Concord don't like you enough, they will not wait for you to commit an of aggression, they will just destroy your ship anyway as you jump in. There are ways around this, as Concord do not pod, so Players with really low ratings can actually travel through Empire in a pod. But, if they are outlaws and in a pod, with a lovely bounty on their heads, what would you do?

So where can they go?

-1.99 for access to 1.0
-2.49 for access to 0.9
-2.99 for access to 0.8
-3.49 for access to 0.7
-3.99 for access to 0.6
-4.99 for access to 0.5

So you can see, Outlaws are essentially barred from Empire space completely.

How much aggression does it take to lose security?

Proprety Damage = -2% of your current rating
Agression = -0.5% of your current rating
Ship kill = -2% of your current rating
Pod kill = -12.5% of your current rating

Yes, its a percentage of your current rating. So, remember that Player we discussed earlier who has a positive rating? Well, lets assume he had a rating of 8, then embarked on a career of piracy only recently. Now he has a rating of 4.5, still positive but it does not change the fact the he has decided piracy is the way to go these days.

Any other points?

Yes, warfare. Warfare between Corps is ignored by Concord, they will register warfare as a legal position between Corps and will therefore ignore any acts of aggression, anywhere, while you are at war.
