Did the final mission last night. I'll reserve opinion on the ending for now.

I enjoyed the game but it needs something extra, I'll be playing my second playthrough on classic with this mod I think.

sounds like a good mod. will probably give it a go myself next playthrough.
will be good to be able to respond preemptively to things like abductions and terror missions.

hmm, yeah, not entirely convinced by the ending. maybe its different on different difficulties - if you finish on ironman impossible you get a happier one, perhaps?
not entirely sure of the point either - the ethereals orchestrated the whole thing to encourage us to awaken our psionic power so that we would ascend (and presumably, help them to?)? in which case, why did they still try and kill us once we'd got our power? :p

i did like when the other 2 soldiers stopped at the door to wait for the volunteer, and she just threw them through instead :p glad i gave her the killing blow (a mindfray on an ethereal commander, no less!) though, good final shot for her, i think ;)

Given the features unlocked by modders that were clearly thought about, copied from the original game and then just not used, along with the ending which I thought was a big shoddy - I'd say the game was rushed to market unfinished. I enjoyed it but it could have been so much better.

./agree
Im glad they left the features here to be unlocked, but our right - it makes it look rushed...
Ah well, it's still fun, that's themain thing.i like the little references to the old game too - like the Gollop chamber, and that the last mission is called Avenger :)

Been playing this a lot since the weekend. I really like the squad mechanics and the combat.

Hate the way that multi-level buildings pop around all the time and make movement a bit imprecise sometimes - I've run a guy up to a upper-floor wall only to find out I've targeted a square on the ground behind it and he's cheerfully dropping down into a room full of Bad Things all by himself.

Targetting for grenades and rockets is a pain too, especially when you're trying to drop one near the edge of the map as the mouse scroll 'bounces' a bit when you reach the edge of the playable area.

I agree that the strategic layer is a bit opaque. It's not obvious how you get more scientists and engineers until you've played for a bit. Also loot from missions is extremely random and you never ever have enough alloys unless you get a downed UFO mission. Satellite coverage isn't explained well and I didn't bother sending up more than a couple at first until I had most of North America threatening to leave the programme - and by then I had no cash or uplinks spare.

I've only had one game killing bug where the aliens moved and the game just stopped. I did end up with a guy stuck outside the mission area once; he couldn't move anywhere but I could give him overwatch or fire orders still.

i nearly had a problem last night with a mob that i could see the little face for, but noone could target, and i couldnt see. in its turn it would just blow up random bits of structure. i eventually decided it was stuck inside the ground somewhere and saturated the area with missiles, which seemed to work...

When I do my next run I'm going to focus on stunning the aliens so that I get their weapons rather than having to make my own so that I can invest in other stuff, that should make it more interesting :D

Also I hate that you can't move the camera when targeting aliens and the health display doesn't snap into a visible area if the alien is close to the edge of the screen. When there are two aliens next to each other and one of them has one health left and the other is undamaged I'd like to know which of them my guy is shooting at.

I've picked this up a few days ago.

I find it rather fun to play. Started right away with Classic difficulty and this mod: http://xcom.nexusmods.com/mods/18

The only thing I miss from the original XCOM, is the part where in this new version they simplified the UFO sightings. In the original, you could send multiple aircrafts after it, and it didn't automatically catch the UFO. Sometimes the UFO was too fast and went out of radar range. So far I've not lost an interceptor to an UFO so can't tell whether you get to send multiple aircrafts after it.

Especially I liked the part where 'Noo the UFO is getting away', and then it changes direction and my interceptor catched it.

Nevermind, the EU version might have already that patched in. It's apparently an update that was released just a few days after the initial release of the game.

I've just finished this with the Enemy Within expansion, it's a lot better now with extra maps and stuff to research that has nothing to do with the original. You're still led through it by the nose a bit if you quickly do all the "priority" research, but the game is now probably at the level it should have been at when it originally launched. Still has a sucky ending though.
