If I'm understanding this right, I can have bots out and also take a repair drone to heal them and me?
I was going to head exclusively down the bot tree, but the repair drone sounds handy.
Yes, you can have the drone and 2 bots. The drone is great for tanking and damage. Be aware of the following :

The attack values from your swords and guns stack on the bot.
If you put a sword on the bot, you will notice that he virtually stops shooting. Thus, it may seem like a waste to put a gun on him.
Also his AI improves considerably as he runs straight at enemies, and spinning his little sword around.
Now put a weapon on the bot. In my case i put a guardian/beserker spectral grenade launcher, which has modest splash damage, and very high phase, stun, and interreupt attack values. Now every time bot spins his sword, he phases targets and stuns them. Morever, he doesn't just phase/shock/interrupt the target he's hitting, he does this to other enemies in very close proximity. The reason for this is because the weapon i equipped on him - the grenade launcher - has splash damage, which is applied through the sword, rather than the gun now. (remember bot stops using his gun if he can melee).
Now, for even more splash damage, make sure to equip on the bot a sword that deals splash damage. Given the build I described above a good physical or flame splash damage would be best. Unfortunately these splash-damage swords are a little slower than direct damage swords, but now you got some strong area affects on your bot - phasing, shocking, interrupting, and stunning or igniting. With moderately strong area affect damage. The melee-range area effect phasing, not even bomber bot can match, and combined with melee-range area affect shock, stun, interrupt - your bots tanking abilities versus the swarm increase significantly. Combined with training / gear to create a high armor class for your bot, he becomes a very potent tank.
Before anyone says this is overpowered. Remember 3 things. First, your bot generally does not use his gun in combat with a sword attached, unless he cannot reach the mob - thus this seems a pretty good tradeoff for losing one weapon. Second, to equip a good level appropriate gun and sword, and armor on you bot requires a large number of attribute points, which require's using up skill points. Third, mods equipped to weapons of even PC players affect both weapons.
