Intarweb usage monitoring at work

Theyve brought in rules here for internet useage, mainly as the sheet metal workers on 30 an hour in the production buildings were looking at racing results all day instead of making bits of helicopters :D , but the fuckers have applied it to everyone.

They are watching this log thing, and have even made it live on the intranet so everyone can see who is browsing.... but it seems to be only catching Internet Explorer doing stuff.

I use Firefox.. and my name isnt appearing on the log, unless I open IE to use the intranet.

Is there some sort of monitoring that just watches what IE is doing? and can i use ICQ without some greasy haired, yellow toothed dork in a "LOST" t-shirt from I.T coming to my office and giving me a lecture on internet useage and making the room smell of spot cream and sexual desperation?

Sorry bud haven't got a fookin clue but cheers for making me laugh at this time of the morning :D

If they're just looking for internet browsing, they wont pick ICQ up, as it uses a different port etc.
They sound crap if they only pick up IE, they should be looking for all http connections. Can't imagine that'd be any harder than what they're doing atm. :p
You could always load web-icq in Firefox if you're bothered.

Hrm, you could access the web through an encrypted proxy, so they have no way of knowing what you're looking at. Then you could claim that it's work-related, and you just value the company's privacy so highly that you've gone to an extra bit of effort.

Or you could do some 'ing work.

Like I am.

Right now.

they have probably got IE to use a corporate proxy server and are publishing teh logs, but without blocking normal http (port 80) traffic outbound.

try 'telnet forums.clanuk.co.uk 80' from a command prompt and see if you get a reply

it did something then the cmd screen just went blank

cool. they area not blockign norml outbound web access then, jsut proxying IE traffic through group policies and the like.

You are probably fine using any non-MS browser....

Probbably :p

Chicks probably correct. Though why they are proxying just IE is beyond me. You either use a proxy for internet connection (all internet connections) or not. Silly company, havent a clue.

best way to show the system as a fook up. RDP to a server. An AD server is fun. Log on as administrator. Go to IE and find BigHairyGing.com

Ahh, thay may explain why my wayward surfing hasn't been noticed at my place, or it may be that IE has been gpo'ed into using the new proxy server, and I'm still on the old one, which was supposed to be decommissioned, but appears to still be working - and because I'm the old one is swift! :)
