Trying to remember the name of a book series but my crappy memory has let me down.
Pretty sure it was done by a popular author. Would be very grateful if somebody could identfy the books form the plot elements i can remember.
Starts with the central character(s) as teenager.
Boy displays powerful magical ability in defending a girl from a roaming monster.
Taken on by mage as apprentice but is unable to develop magical ability as the structured magical system does not work for him.
Later the apprentic and his boyhood friend end up in a dragons den the apprentic is taught dragon magic and the friend gets a powerful suit of armour/weapon.
Turns out their a second world with a different magic system that does work for apprentic.
Two worlds were seperated by an ancient mage due to protect them from a chaotic spirits who are the remments of a godlike race.
Apprentic combines the different magics and evetnually banishes the bad guys.
This all goes on with an epic war going on with good elves and mad elves.
Really enjoyed the books when i was young(er) 20 years ago.
Any ideas ?
