I don't know much but would recomend a tekkit server because it's got a great bundle of mods and it automatically updates so all the players don't have to faff about with jar files to get their client working. I assume the server is fairly modular as well.

To server I host is on a 10up/10down line (same server the TS thing is), but it's biggest issue by far is lack of RAM as Minecraft server can just chew up memory like it's going out of fashion, the tekkit server I run takes up 3GB of ram and need restarting every couple of days.
There are places out there where you can buy a hosted server with x player slots which may fit the bill or they would be welcome on the server I run. Running it was simple though, I just unblocked the port on the firewall, downloaded the tekkit server files, unzipped them and then run start.bat (oh and a quick edit of the .bat file to set memory usage)
As Aciid said I'd recommend a tekkit server/client for all the extra fun and interesting things it unlocks
If they/you want to see tekkit in action just download the client, and either run technic (which is tekkit but single player, but it does have some additional stuff the server doesn't) or connect to the server I have (same host as the TS server I host, if you don't know that PM me) and have a poke around
P.S If this doesn't make sense I'm blaming the flu !

My 2 kids have played on Gottaas server and both were well received and helped loads if they needed it

Specifically:
Normal World portals that are within 1024 distance of each other on both X and Z axis are almost always going to link to the same Nether realm portal on initial construction because 1024 translates to a distance of 128 in the Nether Realm, and the game checks for existing Portals within 128 "radius" around the destination (the 257x257x128 box).
It's a bit buggy, but if you're quite close in the real world, you'll be even closer in the nether. Its usually best to destroy "personal" nether portals and make a central one if its in a village or town-like situation.
