Multiple screen use & VPN & resolution

Ok, at work got given a new laptop and a nice 22" wide screen.

We use a remote desktop for our systems and it seems I can't easily use the monitor & the laptop screen at the same time?

What I want to do is have my email etc on the laptop screen and spreadsheets open on the monitor.

As these are on the remote desktop I cannot figure out how I can get the monitor screen to use it's own resolution, as it uses the laptop resolution which looks crap.

Any ideas? Oh and win7 btw.

Normally you can't split screen across monitors on a laptop, the key (I think control F5 normally) to switch it on at best will duplicate on the laptop and monitor, at worse only show one at a time, you need a more meaty video card to support dual monitors. So the answer is probably that you can't :(

Not sure what you mean by remote desktops but Windows 7 does allow you to extend your desktop across dual screens. You can also have different resolutions for each screen.

There is a limitation with some versions of Windows to 'Use all my monitors for the remote session' for remote desktop connections. I remember having problems with remoting to a Windows 7 Pro client PC and being unable to use all monitors, whereas remoting to Windows Server 2003 it was enabled. I think I remember finding a MS answer to the question where they said this was deliberately disabled for Windows 7 Pro.
