Passive Shield Tanking

Few peeps were asking so thought be worth making a post.

This is where you use your ships shield recharge to boost your shields.

Shield recharge is exponential. The closer to 30% shields, the faster the regen (same with cap recharge aswell!). If you get your set up right for the DPS/NPC's your facing, your shields will stop going down as the DPS is equal to your shield recharge rate.

Your ship has a base shield amount and recharge. This can be highly manipulated.

A ships shield recharge will never go up if you increase its shield amount. So by adding shield extenders to the ship, you increase its shields but the total recharge time doesn't change. So having 3k or 5k shields, the recharge time is the same but the ship with 5k shields will regen more per tick.

Good example is a Caracal..

-Highs-
Stuff

-Mediums-
2 x Large shield Extenders (T2 if possible)
2 x Resists (NPC dependant)
1 x AB or w/e

-Lows-
1 x Shield Power Relay
1 x BCU or w/e

The setup above increases its base shields massively with the 2 extenders and the shield power relay reduces the ships base shield recharge. So instead of a ship with 1250 shields and a recharge of 1000secs, its now a ship with around 5k shields and recharge time of 750 secs. This gives a very high shield per tick rate once you hit around 40-50% shields depleted.

Skills also effect recharge and shield capacity:
Shield management, 5% extra shields per lvl
Shield Operations, 5% increased shield recharge

While shield upgrades doesn't effect anything directly, having the skill at lvl 4 allows use of T2 large extenders which give a bonus of 2100 per module. IMBA!

Good ships to shield tank with are Caracal, Stabber, Cyclone and Ferox.

The shield power relay nerfs cap recharge by 35% but as the above dont use cap to fire weapons and you wont need shield boosters due to passive tanking, cap isn't an issue. Even running a few hardeners doesn't run the cap dry either.

For shield tanking, i'd highly recommend having the three shield skills mentioned above at level IV.

If you find your shield regen is evening out dps at 20% or below on a regular basis, id add another extender, another shield relay or look at getting some resistance modules if you haven't

not unless they've changed things a lot recently.
highest recharge point is somewhere around 30% (30-35? not sure tbh). once it gets below that, the rate decreases. so if you're not stable by then - run, you aint getting stable :p

in spaaaaace!
Works a treat with Matari ships and we don't use cap for our weapons. I've got a passive tanked Rifter with

H: 3 autocannons and a rocket launcher
M: Burner II, Shield extender and Hardeners
L: Fill with Power relays!

Cyclones get huge bonuses to shield boosting, so make better active tanks.

Jaguar Passive Shield Tank

H: Guns + rockets
Meds: AB II, Med Shield Extender II, Shield regenerator, Kinetic Shield Hardener
Lows: 2x Shield Power Relays, 1x Gyroscope II

sweet Shield tank, >60% is resists across the board, awesoem dps. I'm in love :)
