pinging the router though does only affect the router doesn't it ? and I guess I've incorrectly assuming that routers firmware would be better at protection from such things. Good to know though

Most cheap routers run linux.
And if they are responding to ping, they could be configured to forward that packet to a internal machine.

Ping isn't really exploitable, it's only paranoia. Yes theoretically it could be used to dos your router, but realistically anyone with a hosted box can do that anyway.

"The breakdown of security flaws in browsers, the primary attack vector for malware - is as follows for 2009:" is bollocks as well, there is no emphasis on what kinda of security issue was there, all of firefoxes were minor cookies and crosssite scripting, while IE had one remote executable code one, it also doesn't show how long it took to fix the bugs when found. Popular products will have more bugs found, it's the nature of the beast.

Your opinion is worthless....
Well I am testing out Opera, nice browser must admit, used firefox for ages but of late it's been running like a dog, so perfect time for a change :)

Who would configure there router to forward pings onto there computer though ?

And Opera won't stop you from downloading spyware, so just be sure to still be careful when browsing, a guy at work swears by Chrome but I still really like Firefox along with adblock. Hate browsing on a browser without something like adblock, the normal site I goto suddenly look so much busier and messy

Lol......gissa job!

Oh and since I disabled ping requests, my xbox stalls during MW2 games. I suspect as the game needs to change hosts now and then that this stuffs the game. Reinstalling to HD again and put in DMZ to test. If the same ping requests will be put back on.
