Playstation 3 at E3

Interesting - hadn't seen that video. I've watched the Nintendo E3 presentation, and read the type from the Microsoft display, so got something to say about all of them now.

I think that video has really just cemented my support for Nintendo. The graphics are very nice but didn't manage to sway me. Upgrading my PC has made me realise that after a while you really don't notice good graphics, you just notice not having good graphics, and I think Nintendo is competitive enough on that front to still deliver relatively impressive visuals. They don't seem to be up to Sony's standard, but I also don't think they're sufficiently inferior to make people regret buying the console. Coupled with Nintendo's ingenious re-invention of the controller, and I think they’re onto a winner.

I was actually most impressed by the end of the Nintendo presentation which had been relatively lacklustre in its array of speakers until that point, where they brought a random guy onto the stage and let him play in a doubles match with Miyamoto et al. The fact that he picked the controller up and manipulated it in 3D space so effortlessly speaks volumes in my opinion about what Nintendo have achieved. As long as they manage to shift the units (and with the best launch line-up on any Nintendo console to date I think they will do) developers should come flocking to make use of the interface. Fingers crosses that Nintendo pull it off - hopefully a much reduced (when compared with the PS3) launch price will make it that bit easier.

Nintendo suck I'm afraid. The Gamecube was a failure and the fact is, buying that console will result in yet more of the same type of cutesy game that Nintendo are forever repeating. They don't get enough 3rd party developers interested and therefore the console will always be in 3rd place behind the X-Box and the PS.

This hasn't been reflected in the games developed for the DS. Nintendo's strategy seems to be high-quality, innovative, medium graphics capable platforms produced at an affordable price, and its definitely worked in the handheld market. From everything I've seen at E3 they're echoing this with their main platform, and in the light of Sony's announcements I think they've got a really good shot at making it. If you check out Nintendo's new launch lineup, you'll see Red Steel, Metroid Prime, a new more adult Zelda and Project somethingorother. These aren't just cutesy games. I think there's definitely an argument to say that they're still focusing a bit too much on games for kids, and haven't properly exploited the 18-25 year old market that made Sony so successful, but they're definitely broadening their horizons. I think we'll see something similar to the DS success - i.e. lots of units shifted on the strength of the main Nintendo brands, with new consumers being attracted to the slightly more adult games, and bringing with them a strong enough market base for developers to create exclusive games that take advantage of Nintendo's unique interface.

My personal sentiments are that I'm not interested in a 360, because I'd rather spend that money on a PC, and I've been more than frustrated already with crap dumbed down xbox to PC releases, or simple dual releases that don't properly take advantage of the PC interface. I'm similarly not interested in the PS3 because I think I'd just end up buying it for a couple of games. It's not really a question of whether or not I can afford it, more than I think it's galling to spend that much on a console that will just sit and take up space in my living room. The Nintendo on the other hand is small, has access to hundreds of legacy games, and is innovative enough to provide more "fun" whenever I want to relax.

I'd rather play Fifa '02, Fifa '03, Fifa '04, Fifa '05, Fifa '06 mtself than a new an innovating game. No wait, I got that round the wrong way !

Lol yer did you see EA's lineup endless sports games with 07 at the end, BORING.

The bad thing is even though they send out the same crap every year people still buy them. Its stupid, go outside and kick a ball around if you want to play football dont do in on the console thats boring. Leave that for things you can do in real life like shoot someone in the head or control a massive battle.

EA get your finger out your ass and stop making the same thing year after year

I've never understood why, if you owned FIFA 04, you'd buy FIFA 05. Surely you'd have to be a total idiot?

Ent, the DS isn't a console mate. The Gamecube had dire sales because of its marketing and its lack of quality 3rd party games. Nintendo just re-hashed a load of old SNES and N64 games and expected the console to sell on the back of the "Mario", "Zelda", etc, brand.

I'm willing to wager that once again, Nintendo is 3rd place in the marketplace with the poorest selection of software available and disappointing sales. They need to do something different; the Nintendo "brand" of games simply does not have the clout anymore to shift mega numbers of boxes. They need 3rd party developers on board and producing for it, just like they will for the PS3 and XBox 360. They also need some 3rd party killer titles that are "exclusive". The Nintendo exclusive games just don't have wide enough appeal. They need a GTA 3 or a Halo, etc. If they do that, then they have a chance but even then, they've already shot themselves in the foot in the console market with the Gamecube and its hard to repair a tarnished brand image.

Nintendos hand held dominance is not in dispute but as I said, this is a console.

The 360 is first, so it has an advantage. The PS3 will sell becuase the PS2 was so good and its graphically superior to the 360. The Nintendo? Well...... it might have some nice games and great graphics but it doesn't really have a significant console brand to build on so its already facing an uphill struggle.

Obviously you buy what you want but from a consumers perspective based on the choice of games and the potential support from the gaming market, its the most risky by far.

Alot of what makes the Wii nice is the pure economics of it, it'll be cheaper to buy first off, games will be the same possibly even cheaper given the PS3 will be using expensive Blu-Ray discs (which as I understand it have less scratch resistant surface than current CD's ..... look forward to buying games you like 2 or 3 times !), and with it's back catalogue of games available it'll be pretty damn sweet, the two games I probably spent the most time ever playing have been Mario World (when the DS came out) and Gran Turismo (first one).

What Nintendo do though better than anyone else is something new though, something innovative and given the only game I really like on the PS/2 is Gran Turismo I'm not going to spend anything from 500 quid upwards to get a PS/3 with the new GT (assuming what I read had the figures correct). I'll get the Wii on release, get Zelda, Mario Galaxies, the truck racing one cos how can jumping massive trucks be bad, Wii Sports and probably the sword fighting one, or maybe the FF one, not sure yet. and I'd guess I'll have all those games plus the console and it'll still be less than the PS/3 though Nintendo could still drop the ball on that.

It you like Nintendo games though you'll like the Wii and I think kids with DS's there enjoying will find there parents more willing to buy them the cheaper Wii than the overly expensive PS/3. Will it ouside the other consoles, I doubt it in the western world but it's the only one of the next gen consoles I've ever been really excited about. All the people I know with 360's seem to pretty much be already using them as doorstops most of the time. With the cheapness of the Wii and the back-catalogue being available to download I can even see people who currently don't have one consider it, because in time they will have seen a friends and had alot of fun with it.

I look forward to what the Wii may become as well, imagine multiplayer starwars, playing a mate, 2 camera so your friend sees you standing in your living room as he fights you and the game draws the lightsabre out of the controller ... Okay maybe that won't be in this generation of game but ... that'll be fun ! :)

Nintendo have already confirmed a broad selection of 27 titles in their press conference, so I think you'll see an entirely different marketing strategy to the ill-fated Gamecube.

Whether you perceive the DS as a console or not isn't really the point. I think it's more interesting to look at the similarities between its launch and the PSP's, and the Wii's with the rest of the market. Both the Wii and the DS are low cost product espousing innovation, and the DS in response has done very well in Japan (http://www.revo-europe.com/news.php?nid=9052). Naturally, this is a different market, but it does shift units which has attracted developers in droves.

On exclusives, Red Steel looks very promising, Ubisoft(?) are committed to a Wii exclusive Resident Evil, Square Enix are committed to a Wii exclusive Crystal Chronicles, and Nintendo have seemingly put more men on games targeted for an adult audience.

Overall I reckon that Wii stands far more of a chance than the gamecube did...especially with a very good looking Zelda game out on release for the first time ever. To an extent I'm probably arguing for it because Nintendo are the underdogs and for various reasons I’d like to see them beat Microsoft and Sony, but regardless, they're definitely a much better bet now than they were before.

My brain is far from working at 7 o'clock in the morning but the 360's launch titles were very limited, and I thought the PS/3 launch titles were going to be equaly limited where as the Wii had more titles at launch compares to the other next gen consoles.

We'll all know much more in 6 months though :)

I forsee X-box being king for this generation, then the Wii, followed a long way behind by the stinky PS/3 which in all honestly I hope fails and we aren't all stucky with Blu-Ray we don't even want. Unless people want disc which are easier to scratch and copy protection up the wazoo.

I hope someone I know gets a PS3 though ... can use our PSP as a controller 'once' then just cos you can hehe
Interested in that you could use the PSP eg as a rear view mirror for driving games .. however then though ... if you're playing on your 40+ inch plasma, first you have to balance the thing on top of it, then its going to be rather tiny, when you would rather just use the top 2 inches of the screen for it!
