Those who use their PSP as a remote media viewer for the PS3 have something to look forward with version 1.6. Previously, the PSP had to connect directly to the PS3 in order to access media, meaning you had to be in the same area as the PS3, and only owners of the 60 Gig model could take advantage of the feature. Version 1.6 adds the ability to access the PS3 from a wireless point in your home, bringing 20 Gig users in on the action, and presumably allowing additional freedom of movement. Not quite the worldwide access we were hoping for, but this is at least a step in the right direction.

No more news on the backwards compatility though.

Just confirmed mine for Friday. Game are doing a midnight pick up although I'm not so sure about that tbh. :)

Not decided on the game front. Probably VF5, Motorstorm and Resistance although I'm a big fan of RR so may get that instead. God of War 2 and FFXII I still need to get as well if they are on compatibility list.

MMO Pimp and Alt Master
There seems to be tons of stock left for launch day - going to cancel my pre-order and wait a few weeks and grab one off ebay for 100 less ;)

US, March 19, 2007 - Sony has at last provided details on version 1.6 of the PS3's system software. This is the highly anticipated update whose release was being timed for the 3/23 launch of the European/PAL PS3. The update will actually arrive just before that, on 3/22.

Out on Thursday according to the article I linked at the top :) I guess for those midnight purchases

Mines Pre-ordered. I've heard of shortages not over stock, as preorders have stopped in places.

In stock at Amazon

In stock at Play

Still stock at Game

3 of the 4 bundles at Toys R us still in stock

If someone wants want they will be able to get one on Friday with no worries I'd say judging by that. But then the PS3 shouldn't have stock problems, 220,000 consoles coming to England, and the Wii had 105,000 on it's launch day. The question I'm still wondering is if they will sit on shelves over here like they do in the US.

Note: The general opinon I read says they sit on shelves in the US, penny arcade even did a strip about it. Personally though I'll only be convinced either way when I walk into my local Toys R Us and look what's there on the Sunday :)

The thing I agree with Sony on here is that they're damned if they do, damned if they don't. No stock and they can't cope, too much and its not selling.

I'd say in the US and Japan where the price is lower its just people waiting for the games. Gundam saw a sharp rise in the PS3 sales and as other games come out it'll push the figures up.

Aye, I'd rather a launch had too many consoles than not enough so everyone gets one and it doesn't become e-bay festivals all over again.

Games will drive the sales, the question is are enough big ones coming out soon to boost it as much as they would want ? And if nothing else hopefully it shows Sony people buy a "games" console for the games above all else !

Some bits from 1.6:

Firmware Version 1.60 also delivers a more convenient process for downloading content to the PS3 from the PLAYSTATION Store. Up to 6 pieces of content from the PlayStation store can be queued up for download while the user enjoys other functions of the PS3 system, including playing games, browsing the web, using media functions including photo browsing, video and music playback. Progress of downloads can be easily tracked under a new Download Management menu under the XMBs Network icon(2).

The Folding@home project allows PS3 owners to connect to Stanford Universitys Folding@home program, a distributed computing project aimed at understanding protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases, such as Alzheimers, Parkinsons, and many cancers. Using the power of the Cell Broadband Engine, PS3 system can perform computer simulations for the Folding@home program ten times faster than your average home PC. Once PS3 system is updated to version 1.60, users can easily sign up to join the Folding@home program by clicking on the appropriate logo on the XMB (XrossMediaBar) under the Network icon. Then, when the PS3 system is left on and reaches idle mode, it will automatically begin a simulation and, once completed, send information back to a central computer(*1). Additional details about Folding@home are available at http://www.scei.co.jp/folding/en/.

It seems that Sony really have been striving to make up for all the love lost with early compatibility fears. Whilst standing by their original comments that backwards compatibility will not be the focus going forward, the early launch of its compatibility site reveals that 1,782 of the 2,451 PS2 titles (in the SCEE region) available will work on your PS3.

Looks like they are including all of the different language versions and SE's as part of the total amount.

Sexy?
This article about the PS3 launch amused me:

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=23570

Seems to suggest there will be PS3s available come launch and not because sony have made a surplus...

"We will be opening 50 key stores around the country at midnight. However, we have decided to open the doors of our Oxford Street store at 7.30am on the Friday,"

"Previously, we've held very successful midnight events for the Wii and World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade. We felt that unless we could do a midnight launch as spectacular as those, we'd rather not do it at all."

Well given how they went in the US with people getting shot and stuff you can kinda understand them not being keen on it.
