Quick question regarding the free nature of the game...

Can I play this game completely without paying anything? Can I just download a version and play? Or do I have to buy the game first?

A few friends and I are mildly interested in trying out, but only if it doesn't cost too much. :)

Free, but capped at lvl4.

Saying that you find gems that unlock the levels easily enough, for example I have an unlock for level 8 and I hardly played this at all.

All free unless you want to be drow, forged and another race I can't remember. Some maps etc need to to paid for too, but plenty are free and if you do want some content you only need to make a one off payment for the bits you want.

Plus it seem when you do buy anything the membership auto-unlocks to the next level, which gives you a few more goodies....see Cull's comments somewhere on this forum.

I have two unused copies of DnD Online that I will never use. If anyone wants the keys out of em just let me know and I will PM them to you.

Thanks for all the infos. :) A few friends and I are looking for a new home, MMO wise, and we thought about trying out DDO. :) To be honest, I have no idea where we are going to end up. So far Everquest (1), LotRO, DDO and WoW have cropped up as suggestions. I suppose we are going to see what the majority of the group wants and will then play that. Still, thanks a lot for the info. :)

apparently it works under wine in linux too.

i downloaded the us mod-8 thing this morning out of curiosity and it's patching now if you stick in a lotro patcher dll, heh.

i wonder if that means lotro will work too?

i downloaded the US one, patched it then servers were down today for more patches. repatched and it runs and lets me get to the character creation screen. seems to run at what i can only assume is full speed too. looks pretty too.

i'm surprised 'cos it's presumably direct-x not ogl. i didn't expect it to perform at all under wine but it does.

btw lotro currently are running a 10% xp bonus in the runup to the release to mirkwood, so now a good time to start
