Random thoughts/questions after first pvp

Plate fitted Ruptures don't seem ideal for small gang warfare. They take ages to turn, accelerate, warp, anything. Wherever we went, I was the last to arrive. On at least one occasion a ship got away because I could not get into web range quickly enough, despite using MWD2. Considering how short our fights lasted, I am beginning to think I should have used the the shield fit. If I am using short range weaponry, slowing down ship and turnrate with huge armour is probably not quite ideal. Of course, that is probably my opinion because nobody was really shooting at me. ;) If I had needed all that armour, I would probably have different feelings. ;) Also makes me wonder whether I should try a long range fit and ignore warp scrambling and webbing, especially as I only ever got into range of my ACs once. By the time I had targeted, chosen orbit, turned on MWD, opened fire, deployed drones, told them to attack and was prepared to warp scramble and web the fights were already over. If I tried to warp scramble and web they died before I got the drones out. Since I seem to have a problem with having too many options, I might have to cut down on options and just go damage.

My overview updated weirdly. Sometimes I saw a hostile show up only to hear on voice "Damn, he got away", while I was still able to see it on my overview for another 5 seconds. Is there any way to speed up the reaction time of the overview? My current setup of name, velocity, ship type, range and icon doesn't seem to be ideal for pvp. Will have to take a look at finding a good pvp one. Are there any suggestions?

It is darn hard to actually find a fight when you are looking for one. I was really surprised when that 5-6 person gang of pirates we attacked fled instead of trying to kick our butts. I didn't really see what kind of ships they were fielding, but it seemed like an even fight going by the numbers.

It is problematic to understand everybody in voice. Not only do some english speaking people have very interesting accents (probably me included), but the different sound levels are problematic, especially when you have 2 people chatting and 1 person giving commands. ;-) Is there any way to ensure everybody has the same sound level?

In the same vein, for my voice chat it does not seem to matter whether I use microphone and loudspeakers or microphone and headphones. Every time I speak at the same time as someone else, everybody gets a horrible feedback noise. I have tried to get rid of that for ages, no luck. Do we have any tech geniuses here that can help me sort that out with my onboard realtek sound?

Now that I am signed up for faction warfare, does anybody have any idea how likely I am to get attacked while missioning in Auvergne? I was told that it was very hard to track down people that are missioning, so it is unlikely that I will get jumped. Is that correct?

How hard. It would depend. A determined scanner could lock onto your wrecks rather than you and come in that way. Its happened to me twice / three times now.

You are probably more likely to get burnt at the base or moving from one place to another id have thought.

IIRC faction warfare takes you pretty much into low sec all the time correct? Id be interested see how that plays out.

Well, I dunno how other people are doing it, but we met in high sec and roamed through low sec while looking for people worth shooting. Faction warfare prey was fairly scarce, took us a while to find stuff and a number of people escaped because the ships were just too fast. We jumped a band of pirates, but most of them fled. We probably lacked tacklers.

We had to leave a number of systems because there were either not enough people there, or too many. ;) From a first time FW participant, I kinda expected there to be more fights and I also expected them to last longer. I was really surprised at how quickly the fights were over.

I havent played for a few weeks now since STO was released and I just restarted on Age of Conan as I have not played it with my new machine setup.

My corp is also in Faction Warfare and we tend to out in a group of 4-5 in our Manticores into Gallente low sec space. We have bookmarks which we fly to once gated in and then we split up, and watch gates relaying info back to each other. It is pretty much a waiting game in Manti's, waiting for that lone battleship or battlecruiser to jump on.
In my first FW mission I was quite disappointed but it does get better as you get more accustomed to knowing what you are doing.

As for voice, I tend to use Vent as they have a nice system where you can set it up for everyone to have the same voice output, which is very useful with someone like me who has lack of hearing, or someone been lazy to setup their voice comms properly or have bad quality equipment.

For roaming PvP in a T1 cruiser you'd probably be better off loading up with resists and Regenerative Membranes rather than plates. The overview stuff is just lag, I don't think there's a lot you can do on your side to speed up the overview particularly although there are a lot of things you can do to speed up loading of the grid (turn off brackets, pretty much all effects and sound for example).

As far as turning everything on in time is concerned, you should pre-fire most of your stuff before you get a lock, that way, as soon as you do lock the target all your modules will be on him immediately. Be careful what you click on if you do this though.

A lot will depend on the general make-up of the gangs you are flying with. if they are predominantly HACs, BCs and so forth then you'll want a faster, more agile ship to get tackles because your DPS will be miniscule in comparison to the rest of the fleet. If they are all in inties, recons, and T1 cruisers then you'll probably be better in a pure DPS role. Mostly though, for low skill pilots, tackling is the most important and useful thing you can do for a gang - in fact you even say that lack of tackles denied your gang several kills, having a bit more DPS doesn't help if nothing gets pointed first.

Well, our gang consisted of 2 BCs, 2 Cruisers, 1 Logistics ship and 1 no idea type ship. ;) The one time I managed to engage at close to optimal range, I did 37% of the damage or something close to that, but that's when I came out of warp almost directly atop them. For the rest, I was too slow or too far away, so the hardeners and regenerative membrane approach will probably work better. I hope. In one fight, by the time I arrived from warp it had moved to around 40km and by the time my MWD got me there, I had managed to fire off exactly 6 missiles worth 150 damage together when the ship blew. With arties, I might have gotten 2 or 3 salvos off at least in that time. Of course, then I would not have hit the other fight where I arrive on top of the ship.

Still, yesterdays outing makes me wonder whether I should switch ships to something smaller and faster with less dps. Maybe try my Stealth Bomber and finally learn how to scan down things. Or build a fast disposable tackling Rifter I dunno.

I was just gonna say why not get a Rifter fitted out for this role, would be dirt cheap and speed tank

Lol you had no tacklers? No wonder you killed fuck all. Come to syndicate, i love those kind of gangs.

Just wrote a nice long reply but Firefox ate it - here's a summary of the summary:
Gang wasn't set up particularly well, It's easy to a a big armchair general dick swinger , but in the end of the day, it was 3:0. Says more about how terrible peopel are than how pro we were. Makes fights like this and this easier to accept.
- Plate ruptures re better for solo / piracy under gate and station guns. In logistics backed small roams, shield ruptures are way better. Longer range snipe BC/Hacs are pretty shit unless you have 10 of them to alpha people, even so you sacrifice a lot for long range guns (Tank)
Shiled Rupture would have been perfect for last night. Possibly even semi-nano it for that extra spot of manoeuvrability.

- Imagine the situation. 6 man pirate gang. In warps a Ship, you lock it and start layinng the smackdown. Local spikes, 5 more land on you, Admiral Akbar pops up talking about TARPS, your ECM and Primary DPS explode. They have logistics and now outnumber you 6-4. Do you:
A) Fight to the death
B) Count your losses and run.

- If you ever find yourself on a gate hanging just jumped through, waiting. MWD back to it. Ships appear in a 15km sphere. You were on the far side of that Myrm, so did bugger all.

- Some people make better tacklers/scouts than others. Even with the best ship in the world, if you can't scan people out, run gatecamps and create safes, you are better off learning the basics in a light cruiser.

- Small Roaming (FW) PvP is just like that. Some days you see nothing. Others you get into a few GoodFights an hour. They are often fast and explosive. From time to time you get "Memorable" big battles that last ages, but they are rarer.

There is a saying in eve: If you get into a fair fight you are doing something wrong. Some nights are just busier than others. Traditionally Thursday -> Sunday are going to be busier than Monday to Wednesday though.

Eve Voice isn't great, though as you learn the lingo it gets easier to filter the useful parts out.

That about all I typed.

Hehe. Never did consider the encounter from the pirates view. Okay, I admit, I would probably have run, too. :)

Here is what I am currently planning to do. I will build 2 more Shield Ruppys and 2 tackling Rifters and ferry them to where I put up my pvp ship storage. That way I should be ready for anything. Although I am still tempted about an Arty Ruppy. ;)

Heh, I never actually managed to get to a gate and just wait. I was so late in showing up most of the time, I had to keep scrambling to catch up with you. I was always one step late.

Either way, I enjoyed yesterday and thought it was a good start. :)

Its hard for other FW people to track you down inside a mission yes(in a popular mission hub). Just keep an eye on local and be careful when you have to jump into another system for a mission. Not many people bother roaming highsec (faction police thingies are pretty nasty) will either be a few dudes in destroyers or one or two guys in heavily tanked bs (Hyp/Mael etc).

I am currently awfully busy at work, so I have not had any time to play beyond switching skill training around, as I was too tired when I got home. I was also told that I might have to go to London "for a few weeks" "soon", so I have no idea when I will be able to play a lot again. I definitely need to ensure I have some long duration training skills I can learn should the business trip to London indeed occur. :) For now, BS5 sounds like a good candidate, or maybe Large Projectile Turret 5. :)

Large Projectile Turret 5
There are a bunch of "ohh fuck i am not looking forward to training that" skills iy could be worth getting out of the way now.
Though Large Projectile Turret V is a fantastic skill to get out of the way now. T2 large guns are all kinds of awesome.

Well, I have been saving the longer skills for longer absences. :) So depending on how long I will have to travel, that will be the perfect choice, especially as I won't have access to Eve while in London. It is not certain whether the trip will really take place, so we will see. Right now I am usually training skills that will benefit me regardless of the ship I fly. Motion Prediction, Rapid Firing, Sharpshooting, etc.
