safe mode not working properly

Had to go in to safemode yesterday and when the computer booted in to it it wasn't displaying properly. All I get is a black screen with half of the text at the top of the page displayed at first ( looks as if someone has layed a piece of black paper over the screen that is not quite covering the text at the top). After a moment the bit of text that I can see turns in to a blue line. Someone on line suggested that going in to VGA mode might help but when I select that option from the screen it just loads normal windows in crappy graphics mode. My monitor isn't a square one but it isnt one of the ultra wide scren jobbies either.

It's probably just not auto adjusted itself properly, there should be a button to do it, or you can do it from the menu on most screens.

I've seen a screen similar where if you adjust the image off the top or side so far parts of the image seem to wrap around and come in from the other side.

Worth checking cables are in properly too etc, they can work loose as most people move their pc/monitor slightly every time it's used.
