Space games?

I was wondering if anyone knew of a decent sandbox game similar in style to Elite.I would like one that would give my PC a run for its money. I was looking at X3, is it any good?
Completely clueless on this subject as I have not played one in years.

thanks in advance as usual.

The new one is still a bit buggy (it does look gorgeous though), I think you're prob better off playing albion prelude if you specifically want an X game.

I'm kind of enjoying kerbal space program atm. You're sort of Nasa and build rockets and get research points by sending slimy goo into space, the moon etc. It's hard to explain the fascination but after you've blown up a few rockets you start to get the hang of it, and contrary to a lot of discussion anyone with a brain doesn't need to use very complicated math to get stuff into orbit, dock etc.

After 131 hours of play though it's starting to get a little dull, but there's still tons to do. Maybe wait for it to be in a sale (it does come up regularly) but it's only 20 quid though.

Early Kerbal space program carreer missions:

Mission 1: Thats one small step for Jeb, one giant leap for kerbal kind.

Preamble: One of the first missions you should probably do is check your space suits actually work, I know the fly boys in the science dept say theyre good, but the constant explosions coming from the from the R&D dept dont fill you with much confidence.

Ship building: Not many requirements for this mission, just go into the spaceship hanger and click on the basic command module.... Launch the mission!

Mission objectives: Its all in the name of science!
Whilst in the command module on the launch pad right click the command module and gather a crew report, weve not put a transmitter on it but you could transmit it back to base if you wanted although the command module only has enough power to transmit one report and were about to generate another couple (you could probably shout your findings over to the crowd of kerbals jeering wtf kind of mission is this at you if you want).
Next up were going to perform an EVA so click on your character (Probably Jebadia if hes still alive) in the bottom right of the screen and press EVA. If you dont immediately fall off the side of the command module (space suits do make even simple things harder) then press space to jump off and its time for some proper science. Right click on your character and take a soil sample (some of the trash the other kerbals are throwing at you makes a perfectly valid sample), keep that important data for return to the science labs later and then right click yourself and do an EVA report and keep that too (You probably can see your house from here and mission control will want to know about it). Now were going to get into space, Right click your character but dont press the eva report yet, press the space bar and then quickly click it and hopefully youll get a report from a low orbit over kerbin (boy are the science guys going to be impressed with the results from this mission). Now walk back to your command module and when youre close enough you should be able to hang on to the outside, then f to board (youll get a message about depositing the science into the capsule). The final thing to do is move the mouse to the top of the screen where the altimeter will move down a bit and you can recover your capsule and end this important first mission.

Mission 1a:
Come out of the space hanger and go over to the aircraft hanger and do the same mission again there, youll probably need to rotate the capsule so it faces up (press the w or s keys until it does) and repeat the mission. As the runway is a different biome so you get even more valuable science, once again all the trash the other kerbals are throwing at you counts as a valuable soil sample, its just a shame the mic inside your helmet cant quite pick up the abuse theyre shouting at you.

I have more introductory missions available should you want them :D

Red Bull gives me wings!
I highly recommend if you are thinking of going down the X3 route is to ignore X3 Rebirth as its a pile of poo poo.
Go with X3: Albion Prelude with the XRM mod it completely changes the whole game and makes it better all round.

I also play Kerbal Space Program and I think its fantastic game and waiting for the KSP multiplayer function although there is a mod version but doesnt work very well. Love designing different rockets and getting to Mun and Minmus etc. I do cheat alittle by using mod called Mechjeb just takes out the stress of getting a rocket into orbit, also use KWRocketry, Ferram Aerospace, BoulderCo (city lights and clouds) and Kerbal Joint Reinforcement (As must).
