Terry Brooks

PVC Love God
Over hyped, under talented hack writer.
His stuff always reminded me of the sort of terrible fan-fic Dragon magazine used to publish back in the day.

i keep seeing his series at shops, and thinking "hmm, he must be good to be still going..." and then i remember that even when i read sword of shannara like 10 years ago or something i thought i was crap and predictable.

Sword of Shanara was such a bad Tolkien rip off it was almost funny. Very poor writer, probably the worst of all the fantasy boys, he obviously never got over reading LOTR. His writing is trite, derivative, lacking in any originality or depth.

from what i've read he's fairly hit and miss, due to being ratehr formulaic, however i don;t find him a particularly bad author. over the last 15+ years or so i think i've read pretty much all of his 3 book series. Some are alot better than others, though it's like digestive biscuits. not particularly exciting, but if you are expecting a digestive biscuit, it's exactly what you are going to get.

i've just picked up the first of his new series that's a bit of a techno-magical post apocalyptic pre-new world crosover, that seems to be at least nodding towards his non-shannara books.

definately a digestive so far, luckily i was after one.

the Wishsong series is by far (IMO;)) his best work if you are interested in trying them out. though it's probaly pretty dated now. I'd agree 'sword' is piss poor, but was his first stuff over 20 years ago. i'd say in general he's beter than piss poor. certainly better than david eddings....

I won't re-read much fantasy stuff I read years and years ago, as I'm sure I'd find them to be crap now.
At the time I thought the Shanara series was ok, nothing special.
Eddings I really liked, although the second triology was a repeat of the first.

Going back to Brooks, I did pick up the first couple in the second? Shanara series and thought they were simply the first series re-written so dropped them.

Started reading the first book and never completed it as I had varnish that I needed to watch dry on my chaos warrior mini's.

I read the first three (well read the elfstones of shannara first) which were good, the second and third series start to get a bit lame though so don't bother. Allanon FTW!!!

I certainly read the first 2 or 3 trilogies as a teenager, and remember thinking then that they were pretty rubbish...

Maybe they'd read better if you dunked them in a cup of tea.

I got Tangle box at the same time as I accidentally got Katherine Kerrs Time of Justice book and I suppose its telling that I haven't got round to buying any more of that series whereas am waiting impatiently for Spirit Stone to drop through my door.

I somehow inherited the Shannara series and have bought a few more (I agree with Chick that its just not the same without Allanon) but they are kinda easy-reading books. Would put him in the same sort of class as Eddings nothing spectacular but readable enough. I don't think I am a particularly fussy reader though *grins*.

Nightwing

Tenuous
Don't talk to me about Walker "Moany" Boh (as the wife calls him). I've read quite a few of his Shannara ones, and they are all basically the same story with a minor rehash of character names and abilities. On the other hand, they are quite readable, perfect stuff for train journeys or the like where you're likely to get interrupted and not pay full attention.

The Bastard Thats Grinding You Down
Comparing David Eddings to Terry Brooks is like comparing Westlife to Boyzone, they keep spewing out the same puerile trash and people keep buying it, who cares who is better?

Both had some decent characters, namely Silk and Garet Jax, but the stories were basically bland and predictable, read one and you can use the rest for loo roll.

There are so many far superior fantasy authors out there, and the Brooks/Eddings types should be relegated to the teenage fantasy section (NOT THAT TYPE OF TEENAGE FANTASY MARKS!) in any bookstore.
