Thx Shalam (Farming)

Shalam showed me an excellent rune farming area yesterday, starting at Beetletun and running to North Kryta where you farm Ettins (and ONLY ettins). This is SOLO, as in NO HENCHMEN!

I haven't done that much farming in North Kryta, but I have already unlocked another three runes including Superior Air (Ele) and Superior Smiting Prayers (Monk). My gold levels are much improved now :)

Farm the ETTINS for their pauldrons!

I'm using a Warrior / Necro atm because that's what I had.

I had to switch my warrior to weilding an axe for Disrupting Chop otherwise I was making NO PROGRESS against their healing signets :(

Skills at this first iteration as follows:-
(I'm sure it can be improved)

Disrupting Chop (Wa)
Dismember (Wa)
Swift Chop (Wa)
Life Siphon (Ne)
Healing Signet
Sprint (Wa)
Well of Power (Ne)(Elite)
Shaddow of Fear (Ne)

Attribs:-
Blood Magic (Ne) 12
Strength 9 + 1
Axe Mastery 8
Tactics 7+1

General procedure:-
You want to fight no more than THREE Ettins at once (max)

* Get onto HIGH ground
* Make yourself seen
* Attack first ettin with SWIFT CHOP to raise adrenalin
* When all three ettins around you cast SHADDOW OF FEAR to slow their attacks
(You are taking a beating at this point)
* Watch VERY closely skills being used by target
* When Ettin casts HEALING SIGNET use DISRUPTING CHOP to interrupt (for 20 secs)
* Immediately use DISMEMBER
* Cast LIFE SIPHON on main target
* Continue with SWIFT CHOP
* If life very low (likely) use SPRINT and run away
(Life Siphon will probably drop him)
* While ettins not after you, use HEALING SIGNET to recharge life
* Move back to corpse and cast WELL OF POWER - get within it
* Take on Ettin #2
etc

NB
* Using HEALING SIGNET while being pounded by three enemies is a MISTAKE since you take loads of damage and do none yourself. Use SPRINT and run to safety instead.
* Always run away at 100 health.
* If you miss the interrupt be prepared to run away and come back re-charged for a second attempt.

BTW you can also farm the Ettins in the Nebo Terrace :)
That's where I got my superior Air rune.

My build for this with a W/Mo :

Attributes :

Healing Prayers : 9
Strength : 9(+1)
Swords : 11(+1)
Tactics : 11(+2) (would be lower but my shield needs 11 :()

Armor : Full Knights
Other Runes : Minor Vigor
Shield : armor 16(req 11 tactics), -2 damage (while enchanted), +40 hp (while enchanted)
Sword : Fire damage 14 - 21 (req 9), dmg + 14%, armor -10 (while attacking), swordsmanship + 1 while using skills (19% chance), +20% dmg (custom). Crappy sword but i still haven't found a decent one.

Skills :

Mending
Balthazars Spirit
Healing Breeze
Final Thrust
Sever Artery
Sprint
Distracting Blow
Beserkers Stance

Method :

Leave Beetleton/Lions Arch/Gates of Kryta/Bergen Hot Springs (whichever route you find easier)
Sprint past any agro'd mobs (or kill if you dont want to waste a slot with sprint)
Enter North Kryta Province. This is the route for the run.
north%20kryta.JPG

Red circles are roughly where i usually find ettins.
The spawn is pretty random, sometimes there are very few ettins, sometimes lots.. avoid the other monsters. The great thing about this is that once you finish the run, you run out into the next area, run back into north kryta and can repeat the run again.. and again until your pack is full of runes.

Killing the Ettins :

Cast Mending.
Cast Balthazar's Spirit.
Find some Ettins.
Target one and start hitting it.
Use Sever Artery.
When the ettin uses Endure Pain, switch to the ettin next to it and hit/sever artery him until he uses Endure Pain, switch back to the first ettin.
Use sever artery again.
Distract his healing signet with Distracting Blow.
Final Thrust when he gets to < 50% hp.
Repeat for the others.

Key thing is to get them just as endure pain runs out.
As you can see i haven't mentioned Healing Breeze or Beserkers Stance, I dont really use them, healing breeze if i occasionally need it. Beserkers Stance if im having a problem killing one.

I'v heard using an elementalist is an efficient way of killing ettins but mine isn't high enough yet.

Hmm. I do have an Ele/Mo.

If the Ele just stands there while the Ettins surround him:-

I imagine Mist Form could be very useful here for defence.

Mist Form {Elite}
Description: For the next 8/18/22 seconds, you cannot take or deal physical damage.
Energy Cost: 10.
Casting Time: 2 seconds.
Recharge Time: 30 seconds.
Linked Attribute: Water Magic. Increases duration.
Skill Type: Enchantment Spell.

The sprint being supplied by Armor of Mist

Armor of Mist
Description: For the next 8/18/22 seconds, you gain 10/34/42 armor and move 33% faster.
Energy Cost: 10.
Casting Time: 2 seconds.
Recharge Time: 30 seconds.
Linked Attribute: Water Magic. Increases duration and armor bonus.
Skill Type: Enchantment Spell.

I'm not sure if Maelstrom could interrupt the signets.

Maelstrom
Description: Create a Maelstrom at target enemy's location. For the next 10 seconds, enemies in that area are struck for 10/22/26 cold damage each second. Maelstrom interrupts spell-casting when it hits. This spell causes Exhaustion.
Energy Cost: 25.
Casting Time: 4 seconds.
Recharge Time: 30 seconds.
Linked Attribute: Water Magic. Increases damage.
Skill Type: Spell.

So far I've concluded that the Fire spells provide the best area damage.
So perhaps a Fire/Water combo build.

I'll experiment later. :)

Elementalists are probably NOT so good for farming as of the patch late yesterday.

Update - Thursday, November 10

* Improved AI so that henchmen and monsters can now detect and flee from area-effect damage spells.

Tried this today with some Ettins in Nebo Terrace and Meteor Storm. They just run all over the place.
Also the sprint is particularly hazardous since you have to cast Armour of Mist while stationary. I died most times just getting near the Ettins :(
Experiment failed.

===

Griffon farming may be more difficult:-

* Improved AI so that monsters will eventually stop chasing fleeing players.

Although the latter always seemed to be the case on the Ettin runs, and is useful.

Just did an Ettin run with Wa/Ne and got 2 GOLDS. So drops not nerfed.
Although I got virtually nothing from the Ettins in the Nebo Terrace.

Hmm... what exactly will be the point in Area spells now? If monsters will move out of the way you will be using a decent amount of energy for a spell that will only deal one very average damage hit. I thought the whole point of area spells was that you could do decent damage over time to a number of monsters. If they just move out of the way....

eg. Firestorm - 15 energy to cast, lasts 10 seconds, does 26 damage per second with my current E's fire attribs. 260 damage in total if it hits everytime. Now you will be lucky to hit once? so 26 damage(if your lucky) for 15 energy.. seems a bit of a waste of time (if thats what happens - haven't actually tried it yet)

There's been some MAJOR bitching about this in the forums at gwonline.net much along the points you make.

Try this thread - only 44 pages long already TODAY!

I have just sold the rune of Superior Fire Magic I was holding onto.
It was 10K a few days ago. I just got 6.5K. It will be worthless soon.
Sup Air costs 410 gold to buy!!!

Just as well I was planning to finish the game before putting it in my elementalists armour!

One thing REALLY bothers me the most. How on earth do you see that as an IMPROVED AI??How??Monsters run around like total idiots doing NOTHING.Yes,great AI,simply amazing.
From the gwonline forum.. thats exactly how i feel about this new update.

Think i'v had enough GW, completed the rpg side on two chars(except for the pointless 20k xp quests.) and the only available part of the pvp (random arena's or pick a team arena's) are extremely tedious as its a PUG.. and PUG's are worse than henches. So... i have some money and materials if anyone needs them.

You'll be missed mate. I thought you'd be a good candidate for officer.

There's been a noticeable drop in morale on the gwonline boards since the last patch and quite a few people seem to be taking a hiatus at the moment. So by all means take a break, but keep an eye on the boards in case we get active in organised CUK PvP.

Personally I've got 53 skills to get yet, so I'm not done yet ;)

If you pop online on Monday or Tuesday, I'm sure someone will take your stash. I have absolutely no space myself and have been selling stuff I wanted to give away.

I just wish there was a better way to meet people in GW, 300 hours in GW and the only people i know in game are CUK'ers and one person i know from another game. Any group you join is very inpersonal as they are all just trying to finish the game as fast as possible or trying to gain faction as fast as possible.

The patch has effected me also i suppose, when i was bored of doing the same old quests on other chars i went and did some farming, was good for a break, not much choice left there though...

GW is a good concept.. pure team game.. pity they have very poor facilities for actually finding a team... Also.. you play your char from level 1 to 20, once your there do you actually feel like you have accomplished anything? I find its still a slog to kill anything, Henchmen work just the same if i stand back and watch. I really miss the feeling of power and accomplishment in this game.
