Co-op mode will interest Talili and I, these games are fun single player, but multi-player and co-op are where they shine

Did anyone ever bother checking out any Torchlight mods? There seem to be a fair few out there, new character classes etc.

I added in a few of the map & quest mods, but none of the new character class stuff. The good thing about most of the new quests/dungeon areas is that they also add map segments to the map generator, so you get more varied dungeons & more quest objective spawn points.. gave the game a bit more longevity on top of just finding ridiculous builds to try (which was still let down a bit by the overall game difficulty).

I forget exactly which ones I was using & am not on my home pc, but looking at the official forums mod list (http://sites.google.com/site/ultimatemodlistwiki/Complete-Mod-List#TOC-Maps-and-Map-Changes) I at least remember trying the following:

Aegis maps
Forgotten Fortress of Rukom
Starch the Monster Hunter
Moog the Enchanter
The Mysterious Man

yeah, i found myself trying to skip through levels as fast as i could, just so that i wouldnt level :p. it was also a shame that you could make such overpowered items with the thingy in town... its just too tempting when its an actual part of the game like that, but it really breaks the difficulty :p

There seem to be a fair few mods that look to balance out the difficulty and add other bosses into the dungeons to give more of a challenge. More importantly there's a ferret pet :O

Engaging old man mode, the game provided me with a good way to disengage brain, which was something I last had with the old scrolling shmup Raptor. Once you got all the powerups in that game you pretty much just held down fire & pressed side to side until the end of missions, very relaxing :) There's something positive to be said for a game which allows you to sit down & phase out, letting your reflexes take over until you snap out two hours later.. getting stupidly overpowered enchants was a big part of allowing that.

Diablo, with magic finding & experience runs had the same kind of vibe in places, but the defaults effort-wise were different enough to retain a bit more of a complexity. Compare enchanting in torchlight to how much mf/trading effort one had to put in in diablo II. Of course, I was too lazy and just ended up creating ghetto diablo builds that were cheap & resilient, but slower. So, in comparison, torchlight offered an ease of access to mindless fun vs. some of diablo's more cerebral moments. Both equally valid gaming experiences, of course.

It is interesting how, as you so rightly point out, exercising restraint or imposing restrictions on oneself is in so many parts down to your starting conditions & rulesets. One could, of course, play around with the thoughts inspiring books like 'Nudge' & 'Protocol: how control exists..' etc, and then go on to talk about this whole 'big society' stuff which is so topical these days, but I see what happens in comments sections on the internet enough to just mention it idly and run away ;)

I am mostly nodding in agreement, so feel free to ignore ramble. Unsure what is stirring up my desire to comment at all today, it'll pass & I'll go back to idly chuckling at the weboblogointertubeosphere. :D

Sexy?
The lack of multiplayer was the big let down for me on the first game so look forward to giving this a spin :)

Some of the pet mods are sweet - though I gather a lot of them aren't mods as such but instant/permenant access to pet variants that you can get as temporary effects from eating food (if that makes any sense to anyone).
I'm having a little problem with the character creation gui though. There's one that shows you all available character mods and lets you know if you have them installed (called Darkbirds or something) but if I install a missing one I get loads of file clash warnings and it also goes back to the standard gui. Going to enjoy having a play around though :)
