The Blue Heaven Ballroom is one of the more upmarket and prestidgious night clubs and jazs halls in Boston. Entry is expensive, at least $20 a night and its classy, Tuxedos, though you can get in with a Tie. Try without and you'll be on your face in the sidewalk.
The music is hot. In fact the Blue Heaven arguably attracts "The" best jazz players and session muscisians. Richard DeLoon oft sits listening to the masters play well through the night. Occasionally he stands in, playing the piano for the masters. Tonight though, he sits in a very crowded club watching and tapping his fingers in time to the music.
The hooch is genuine too. A fact that doesnt pass Luther by. Luther sits at a table next to Richard's and downs yet another shot of whiskey. He grabs the arm of one of the waiters and points to the glass. "Yessir, Yessir boss" the waiter mumbles as he scoots off to fill the glass for the seemingly drunk Texan.
Its almost 11pm. The Club is packed to capacity, a fact that makes Frank comfortable. He scans the room again for his mark, a small time newspaper editor supposedly cheating on his wife, and skimming money from the paper. The latter being the more concerning crime. His presence in the club would make people nervous, afterall, serving hooch was illegal.
Another man enters the club and is shown to the table where Richard sits. "Excuse me sir, the club is full tonight, would you object to this gentleman sitting with you?" Richard shakes his head and soon Alex Shanks finds himself seated next to the muscician, a glass suruptisiouly placed in front of him and filled with the pale liquor. Seconds go by and another man is shown to the table with more apologies. Wearing Tweed, Richard and Alex both immediately assume hes a bookish kind. "Good Evening gentlemen" - a slight French accent shows as Jaques takes a seat. "I apologise for this interruption, but it seems the club is busy tonight"
At the table next to the three strangers sits a well appointed man, though his demeanor suggests he is a little highly strung. With him, and opposite him (a chair between them) sits his understudy Jonathan Henderson. Still suprised at the offer of his boss - one Pete Manusco of the accountants firm Manusco accounting - to accompany him this evening. Though, for the past 3 hours Pete has continually indicated the chair next to him was reserved and has said nothing, Jonathan is convinced his boss is only half listening - if at all - to the band.
The night is in full swing, the band - "The 5-Stars" are in full swing belting out an excellent rendition of "Doctor Jazz", shortly the song finishes and the band smoothly move into "Clarinet Marmalade"
As the song progresses a door opens and a short black man, carrying a shiny trumpet emerges. He totters forwards a little, coming to a halt between the accountants table and the table of Richard. Richard immediately recognises him as Leroy Turner. A trumpeter of exceptional talent. Turning to Manusco he says "Si, I got me lost backstage. Uh, would you be so kind as ta let me by? I really apologise for askin".
Without a blink Manusco snaps at Turner, perhaps a little too loudly "Find some other way, boy, or i;ll have you thrown out!"
