Virgin media hub

Dart

Dead Again, I need a Rez
I'm currently on 20Bbits using one of there older modems and my ASUS RT-N66U router.

Virgin says iv got a triple upgrade to 60Mb but I need a new modem, the super hub. It's a router and modem in one. Will I have to loose my lovely Asus router? :(

I just want the new speed not a new router.

The hub is good (with the right settings)

I was advised on here to change the default and it works lovely....I will try and find the post!

Thats the same setup that I'm using. You just need to access the settings on the hub & set it to modem only, I'm sure that's what I did anyway when our old modem went wrong.

you can use it as a modem only yes.

If you can't find those settings, nothing stops you plugging your router into the media router anyway. You just might have to setup a static route pointing all traffic at the media hub, not overly difficult.

I use the new media hub, and tbh, its does its job very well.

Cull, it was Dareos who kindly advised this:

Got to this thread late, apologies for that Swith.

Now, to business, as the resident VM tech employee (dont all swear at me at once thanks) I have crucial information about the superhub, henceforth known as the shub.

Its crap

ok, now we have that out of the way, the info given so far is correct about the shub, auto channel sucks, so here is the quick fix

log into the shub 192.168.0.1, admin/changeme, click on advanced settings, then wireless settings on the top left, change the channel to 11 and the 802.11 mode to 145Mbps, click apply

Thats sorted the extremely poor wireless to a certain extent, but the shub was designed by a muppet, and it wasnt one of the clever ones. The wireless antenna is in the middle of the circuit board facing down the way, this is not clever.

Solution : Get a wireless router, turn the hub into modem mode,. attach router to 1st ethernet port (next to coax) and use a proper router.

Disclaimer : The opinions in the post above are strictly the opinions of the poster and every other tech worth a damn in VM, and not necessarily the opinions of VM themselves even though they have now admitted that the testing on the hub wasnt thorough and are currently in talks with different manufacturers regarding a new hub

Hope it helps and I still don't know how to link to a post here :D

changing the wireless speed will have no affect on the internet speed. 2.4Ghz wireless (the one 95% of people use) only has 3 non-overlapping channels (1, 6, & 11), so picking one of those 3 will give you a "chance" at good wireless.

On the subject of wireless, if you have it set to 802.11n (up to about 300Mb/s) but have devices that can only operate on 802.11g 54Mbs), the 802.11n devices have to talk in a manner that 802.11g understands, and lowers the throughput of wireless.

Anyway, I think this bit is the most useful:

Solution : Get a wireless router, turn the hub into modem mode,. attach router to 1st ethernet port (next to coax) and use a proper router.

It may require some setting up, try it if you have chance. If you have problems, let me know the make/model of the router you have, I should be able to help you set it up :)

Ah thats a solution for your wireless devices? MY main comp is wired to the superhub and as I said I dont seem to get much over 35 meg speed.

I was going to phone tomorrow and get shirty but ran several speedtests today. The ones to the morecomb server always come in at 35 meg-ish, but the ones to Leeds come in at 55-59 constantly. Several others come in at high speeds too but the london one was slow. Seems its not a problem with my hub or their service but a location one?

more than likely one with speedtest. Don't forget that its still a website, and take the results with a pinch of salt.

Hell if I run the one in Manchester my speeds show up shocking, I blame the company I'm connecting to. I usually try and hit one of the hub towns around Manchester and they all come back with constant results.

We're on 100Mbit just tested .. 89Mbit/s & 5Mbit UL
Using the 'superhub' which must admit is behaving better than when they first came out and we had one, and it needed resetting daily.
What are these non standard settings to use on them tho please?
I don't find the wireless range/coverage/speed is very good ... have spare old routers to use as extenders if it really gets a problem ... already got 2 switches plugged in it ok when they enabled the TiVo to use the network port so I can use the iphone app instead of the REALLY SLOW remote, needed a switch upstairs too

Got it, and found it really easy to switch to modem mode.

Thanks for the help everyone
