virus checkers

i've decided i should get a proper virus checker (i use avg, and i'm just not convinced about its effectiveness).
so, whats a good one? i don't mind paying for it if it's noticably better, though obviously i'd prefer a free one if it'll work just as well.
a quick look at a couple of review sites suggests BitDefender - is it as good as they say? (ie. worth pay 15 for it for a year) - or should i just get some free one that's just as good but not as pretty and well advertised?

There was a review done I think 6 months ago, it was something like one I've never heard of 1st, Nod32 2nd (which we use at work) and AVG 5th or 6th.

As far as I'm concerned AVG is enough, and unless you're being really stupid or are just plain unlucky it'll be enough. But then now I'm more concerned about spyware than viruses now and am looking for a replacement for spybot S&D, something that's memory resident I could install on my grandad PC's

TBH matey I'd recommend sticking with AVG as well. Go try Mcafee and when you have to re-install the machine just to get rid of all the extra junk they bundle in (firewall etc) not to mention the fact that AVG scans just as many viruses etc, you'll really appreciate AVG. I've heard Norton isn't bad, but tbh any pay virus guard will have you wondering why you're paying for it after a while when they all do the same and free AVG ranks better than most.

The only extra thing I would recommend is installing something like Lava soft's anti spyware package spybot. But whatever anti-virus product you install you'll still need some sort of anti-spyware in addition.

Gottaa, isn't the new spybot update got a resident doo-da?

My AVG went tits-up somehow, so I gave up and I'm using Avast which seems good too.

Your opinion is worthless....
I have the full AVG, rather than the free it comes with all the bits and bobs such as spyware so on so forth, it's good I personally have never had any real issues with viruses or spayware, so I would say it works well.

previously I used Norton's but it's a nightmare as it dumps a ton of crap on your pc and is a pain to remove.

I've been using AntiVir for a few yearas after it cleaned up on a bunch of awards. It's allegedly the best one out there, and totally free. Even sucessfully campaigned to be allowed to use it at work as Norton is, as noted, complete tosh.

I downloaded the free version and it kept popping up a window during set-up saying it was a 30 day trial, did I want to buy it now?

I downloaded this the other week, so perhaps they are now only doing 30 day trials now?

Then again maybe I downloaded the wrong version, but I clicked that big red button marked 'download free version'!!

hmm, not entirely sure.
I've had soem grief off it in the past, doign a similar thing to that, however a re-install seems to work. The most common problem is it failing to auto-generate the 'free' serial number due to a minor bug in the installer, leading it to want your hard earned dosh. Try a re-install ?
