West Ham going down?

He's a decent journeyman manager, nothing more. His win ratio at Southampton is 42% - hardly top quality.

Well his career stats are

win 43.8%
draw 23.5%

If he takes that into the Prem (if they get a result tonight that is) he'd finish with roughly

Played 38
Won 16
Drawn 9
Lost 13

Points 57

Thats UEFA Cup time :D

Martin O'Neill isn't that much better at 54% and he has a huge spell at Celtic to inflate his stats. Without Celtic he's at 40% and he was touted as one of the best up and coming Managers in the game before his move north of the border.

They didn't, so he won't, and Martin O'Neill hardly set the world alight this season either. Up and coming is not equal to "top top manager" as Janie stated either :p

Top manager doesn't equal greatest manager ever. As normal you've taken it out of context.

It's generally you who likes throwing silly 'EVA!!!" comments about, for example both Warnock and Wenger have been labelled 'The worst losers EVA!!!!" by you this season, which suggest you have alittle trouble keeping things in context, or you don't really know much about football at all. ;)

No Aston Villa or O'Neil didn't set the Prem alight but the team showed a marked improvement over last season, and had a strong finish to the season.

You're always the voice of reason Janie - your measured, balanced and informed opinion always lights up these boards.

Saying someone is a top, top manager implies to the average, well reasoned individual that you think they're really, really good.

Calling something top means it's at the top. On the subject of current football managers in this country, I'd take that to mean Wenger, Fergie, Benitez and Jos. There are lots of good managers. There are some very good managers but those four are the top in my opinion.

You said Burley is top, top. That means better than top, surely. So your statement implies he's as good as or better than those four.

It seems a tad daft accusing someone of taking your comments out of context when they interpret what you said as....well....what you actually said.

In this case, context appears to have given you a wedgie, stolen your lunch money and run off down the street laughing.

And if you said a film is really, really good you wouldn't be calling it the best movie EVA!!! would you? No.

Well those 4 managers have a brilliant set up at their clubs and have had great financial backing. Yes some managers just don't know how to spend money and many would fail horribly if they walked into the Chelsea job, but I honestly think that GB & MO' are excellent managers.

They're not middle of the range muppets and have shown the potential to excel at their job.

One of the most respected managers in football Dario Gradi decided never to move on from Crewe and hence won cock all but did he produce excellent young talent and solid teams? Still less than 4:10 win ratio though.

You can be a top, top manager without winning a bean in my opinion (ie. you manage to keep a team in the top flight of football running your club on a tight budget for 5+ years as Alan C did at Charlton)

I think its worth pointing out that Wenger went into the job after a disasterous period for us and completely reshaped the club from diet and fitness to totally changing the culture and way we play football. Without great financial backing as well.

Ferguson was on the verge of the sack at ManU before he finally got it right. Maureen worked wonders at Porto again with little budget.

Indeed Wenger changed the way Arsenal thought about and approached football, thank God, but he has had money when needed (within reason).

Fergie was still doing things right before that first trophy, but he is probably a good example of how money doesn't save you from buying complete stumps. His quest for a midfielder brought us Veron, Kleberson and the arse they named twice.

Now I reckon Kleberson probably would have done better if he'd have had a proper run but in the end he turned out a bad buy.
