Useful to know before you start somewhere and wonder why there is bugger all content... 
Thestra is the first of the three continents and has been around since B1. It's traditional northern european high fantasy in feel but needs a revamp for graphics and content (coming soon by all accounts).
Qalia was opened up about 3 months ago and is much more complete up to 20ish although it still needs work. Qalia is more of a desert setting - more arabian knights if you like. This is probably the best place to start first characters at the moment.
Kojans not open yet but will be at some point soonish (alledgedly)
There's still major revisions going on to all three spheres (adventure, diplomacy & crafting), SOH really is still beta phase rather than a "preview/marketing release" so expect some stuff to suck
There's plenty of good info on the beta boards (including plenty of WOW fans tring to turn it into WOW with no CRs, etc )
A good starting point is the current state of the game post - clicky here
It'll be nice to have some familiar faces around.... see you in game
