Witcher 2

Treebeard

Ranger of the North
Who's got it? What do you think?

I'm about 15-20hrs in and it mostly does everything better than the first game (which I really liked).

The skill tree's make more sense, the acting and story is generally a lot better and conversations flow more naturally although sometimes Geralts replies still seem as though he is having 3 conversations at once and getting confused. Women mostly just seem to be there for Geralt to sleep or flirt with, much like the first game. The characters are generally pretty engaging though and the story while gubbins, is good as far as RPG's go.

The game itself is a bit clunky.

Combat started off quite tough, mostly due to being over-whelmed and the fact that I felt I was fighting with the controls. There can be delays to actions you want to do with no reason for the delay and sometimes a skill just won't come off at a crucial time.

Unfortunately once you get one or two specific skills the combat then becomes a bit too easy. One skill in particular has rendered combat mostly trivial for me which is a shame. I'm trying not to use it.

There are lots of little odd quirks from RPG's of gaming past. You can't open a door or jump from a ledge when in combat for example, that sort of thing. The autosave is mostly pretty useless.

A 360 pad works very well.

Graphically it is quite astounding. Forests especially are very convincing in a Crysis kind of way and the textures and lighting are lovely. It's a really rich world which is probably its strongest point but it is more linear than something like Morrowind.

So far I'd rate it up there with the better RPG's of this gen. I prefer the open endedness of a Morrowind though.

Version 2.0 came out a couple of days ago for The Witcher 2, with an arena mode in which you fight wave after wave of mobs, quite good fun, shame there is no co-op. Well worth a look if you have the game already.
