only heard the one song off it on the radio so far (know your enemy), which i wasn't too keen on - but i'm often not keen on the songs that get the most playtime, but still like the rest of the album, so will give it a shot :)

i've listened to it about 4 times now.
it's terrible.
Toothless, sprawling, over-produced nonsense.
Not sure what i expected though to be honest. AI was very similar, though it at least had the benefit of 2 decent tracks where as this is just lame. They are now firmly enshrined in the "wetsauce psudo indie drivel" genre which is a shame.
Glad i didn't get tickets to see them live now.

I don't think it's overproduced - well certainly not the levels Bob Rock and all his shiny baubles of doom would have done anyway. I'm firmly in the Green Day got good with American Idiot camp - I hated the band pre that album, infact I had trouble coming to terms with the fact I liked AI so much - 'Dookie' and all the other 90's material was horrible (and I liked 'Ignition' and 'Smash' by The Offspiring back then). I would agree with your sprawling comment it way too long and would be better if 4-6 songs cut. As for "wetsauce psudo indie drivel" I pray you never hear Fleet Foxes or Animal Collective :)
As for 'toothless' this is Green Day what did you expect?

Fair enough, it's horses for courses though. I'm firmly in the "green day have only ever done one good album and that was 15 years ago" camp. Dookie was awesome but they should have just given up there imo. It would be better i think, if they changed their name so people didn't get confused as too which Green day they are supporting. Then again, there is some respect that has to be offered to them for evolving. Just because I don't like it doesn't mean they should ... hang on - yes it does. They should stop sounding shit!

They have, it seemed, tried to "grow up" from their 90's angsty teenage punk rocker phase into some kind of coffee table punk-jazz trio. IT's terrible. Maybe they can collaberate with Chris deBurg and Elton John for their next album.....

The Offspring "The Offspring" > Ignition too btw :p

Well if you want a 'dookie' type album there is always Busted or Mcfly ;)

The Offspring "The Offspring" > Ignition too btw :p

Never heard it. My liking the Offspring was short lived - Smash came out I liked it and 'Ignition' turned up in the record store at the same time. This was before the internet (well for me anyway) and information (and music) on bands wasn't so easy to find - by the time the next record was released I'd lost interest in them - then when a few years later 'Pretty Fly' became a huge hit I was embarressed to own anything by them and promptly gave 'ignition' and 'smash' away :p

Sometimes (not very often) a band you think are awful will suddenly get good erm Green Day and Silverchair spring to mind for me.

21st Century Brokendown.

1. Song of the Century - minute long narative intro, not long enough to be a genuine annoyance. Fairly pointless though.

2. 21st Century Breakdown - 5 minute long song. The first 3 minutes are fairly good, then the final 2 minutes the tone shifts and it goes downhill.

3. Know Your Enemy - First single fairly punchy but nothing special due to it's repetativity.

4. Viva La Gloria - First song I really like, starts nicely and slowly with just a piano before kicking in. Beach Boys sounding chorus is insanely catchy.

5. Before the Lobotomy - Another slow starter before kicking in to a decentish chuggy rock track, sounds like an American Idiot offcut or B-side.

6. Christian's Inferno - Completely Awful. Skip.

7. Last Night On Earth - The 'Wake me up when September comes' of the album, probably be a single. It's ok if alittle mushy.

8. East Jesus Nowhere - The 'Holiday' of the album, one of the best on the album.

9. Peacemaker - The quirky track that is actually pretty good, runs along to a 60's movie beat.

10. Last of the American Girls - Typically 'recent' Green Day track mid tempo rocker with a big chorus with layered with harmonies.

11. Murder City - Best of the uptempo tracks, completely throwaway but gets stuck in your head - more harmories again (theme of the album)

12. Little Girl - Another quirky one, again a like this quite alot (i've noticed the middle of the album is where most of the best tracks are).

13. Restless Heart Syndrone - Safe midtempo plodder, I tend to forget this one quite abit - which isn't a good sign.

14. Horseshoes & hand grenades - A riff is a complete rip-off of The Hives 'Main Offender' - most rocky song on the album, but I can't get past the blantant stealing.

15. Static Age - Decent, big chanty chorus.

16. 21 Guns - Get ready for this song to be one of the songs of the summer, it's the second single and is very much in the mold of 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' - it's a good track, but it'll get old quickly :p

17. America Eulogy - Song of 2 parts (revisits the intro of the album) I don't really like this much.

18. See The Light - Dull, dull ending - Trying to sound abit like The Boss.

Smash is still one of my all time favourite Albums, just found my copy again recently \m/

The offspring are amaznig, except for one dodgy early album and one dodgy late one (splinter) they ahve managed to hold theimselves together despite a level of popularism that would crush most bands.

Luckily, the irony of their latter work is lost on many people who then give their cd's away.

My favorite albums are probably smash, americana, though ixnay and offspring have special spots too. To hell with green day. 1 good song in 4 albums is a bit weak.

Pretty Fly was awful, right up there with 'Heaven is a Halfpipe' and 'Teenage Dirtbag' for terrible goofy fratboy rock. The only thing Ironic about it was by releasing it The Offspring became a parode of themselves. I don't deny that Pretty Fly probably doesn't represent the body of their material thesedays but any band willing to release that utter pap doesn't deverse another chance :p

*Bzzzt* Wrong :)

Then again berating a band for releasing 'utter pap' then praising green day, whilst admiting most of the album is meadiocre drivel is a bit too good. You have made my morning.

Well the only reason I posted about Green Day is because generally praising a lesser known band gets no interest :p I know a few people here liked AI and I just posted what I thought, it's not as good but worth a purchase if you liked AI :) I've brought better albums this year (and a few worse)!

You have made my morning.

Hey Chicky.

I think i've found a band you'd like (genuinely). I know my strike rate is 50% at the minute - anglefish = win, Girls vs Boys = lose (although you never actually brought the right album by them!). Anyway from this conversation above I think you'd like this band called 'Billy Talent' - i'll post some youtube links up later when I have more time.

I personally wouldn't bother with the first album till you've heard II and the new one III.

From their second album called 'II'.

Red Flag : Probably their most catchy song

In The Fall (Navy Song) : Someone's video effort

Pins and Needles : Their slowest song

Fallen Leaves : Weird real video!

From the brand new album (called III) :

Saint Veronika : I think this is probably the best track on the new album.

Dead Can't Testify : Another good one.
