An author you can't stand.

Enjoyed Mordants need too, have even reread it a few times. I think when I first read the Covenant stuff I might have run through it a couple of times but its not a series I have gone back to since (unlike most of my books)

bollocks :p admittedly some of his work was plain wierd, but on the whole he was good, nice anti-heroes. Elric for example, is in my top five, with Karl Edward Wargner's Kane character and Waylander, up there too.

The worst author I've come across was Stephen Donaldson, if I wanted to read a theosaurus I would 500 pages of description 25 pages of plot, and he loves donkey's cocks too. :p

Swith m8, try Simon R Greens Hawk and fisher books but read Blue moon rising first :D very good, they've been re-releast I think.

Moorcock's Warrior of mars....read that shite m8??? Admitedly Elric and some others are good, but I hate his conceited opinion of himself.

As for Donaldson.....just because your a northern monkey with a volcabulary that is limited to whippets, banana and eh up, some of us can read other words that exist! :D (ok I agree a bit long winded and unneccesary use of odd words at times, but still a very good writer)

I've been re-reading a couple of Gemmels old books Legend & Wolf in Shadow, cracking reads :)

I'll look out for those Simon R Green books, read Shadowsfall by him that was very good.

Stephen Donaldson is not all bad, Mordants Need was a good series and the GAP series was OK but needed to be about 2 books shorter. But his latest attempt at another Covenant series was long winded, boring, pointless, badly written pile of poo. I gave up after 200 pages with no sign of a story starting.

Have to agree, the Gap series was one of the best things I've ever read. And I'm not sure I got even 200 pages into the new Covenant novel...it seems Donaldson blows hot and cold, or maybe you have to be in the right mood?

Simon R Green is quality, The Deathstalker series is a great piece of pulp fiction. Ok it's not mind blowing in the highbrow fantasy department, but if you want a ripsnorting, page turner full of weird alien shit and people having limbs randomly hacked off - it's a good way to spend an afternoon. :)

read one of Greens, it was utter garbage, would need a lobotomy before picking up another of his books.

Dislike Tolkien immensely, great ideas, wonderful creation, poorly written

Donaldson is a strange one, Convenant series was terrible, and i read 2 of them, kept waiting for something to happen. The Mirror of Her Dreams and A Man Rides Through were excellent though

I'll just add :

Richard Laymon like an American version of Shaun Hutson.
Anne Rice and her boring romanticised vampire novels.
Helen Fielding novels for people who like Ok and Hello magazine.

I've a deep-seated fondness for Tolkein. it was pretty much the first "elves lol" style fantasy i ever read, even before the much abused Belgariad, though i never read anythign further than "The Return of the King". I agree it's got a stigma attached too it, but for all it's faults, such as 2/3 of the Two Towers aka "Elves - poetry lol" and it's general Emo-ness, it laid down the groundwork for the fantasy world most of us grew up with.

There are very few authors, real or virtual i've encountered that have managed to avoid incorporating pieces of classic Tolkein into their lore.

Back on topic, have i had Jane Austin yet? if so can i have her twice? f**k period drama :(

/Casts revive thread.

I'd just like to add my total and utter dislike for 'Lee Child'. Having just finished his second vile 'Jack Reacher' novel I can't believe this guy is actually making a living as an author. Seriously this guys writing make Dan Brown look like Billy Shakespeare.
As well as being a truely limited writer he also has managed to create a series of books based around the adventures of the most boring, dull and completely personality free zone hero. Jack Reacher lacks any personality playing the silent and deadly (dull) card while being impossibly good at everything, yup everything there isn't anything that phases him at all, and women fall at his feet because that's the way the books are written (and the only reason!).
They are like reading a script for a Steven Seagal movie - utterly dreadful.

Simon Green - Daemons are Forever (imagine a cross between Bond and Buffy - Boffy maybe or Bund).

The worst written, poorly executed book i've ever read - just awful. One of the lesser characters name changed midway though the book, only to change back near the end :(
Should come with a 'Reading for Dummies' label.
