Baffling computer problem

Computer is running like new with the new ram and drives. But I have noticed a strange set of "problems" that I think might be linked. Speedtest on broadband is 62-65 meg constantly, its supposed to be 60 meg. But I have noticed that if I do a search for pictures on any browser I get the usual long list, but about a third of the way down the pictures stop and there are only placeholders where the pictures should be.

Same thing happens on Facebook - scroll down a couple of times and links like film files and pictures are just placeholders as if the comp gets so far loading stuff in and then just stops.

Reinstalled Diablo II LoD today and when I go in to the chat bit and click for games, none apppear in my list or just one will occasionally. Other folk at same level and difficulty can see loads. I think this is linked to the above and could be an internet problem but I am totally in the dark?

alrighty :D

the 2 connections aren't anything to worry about, its a windows thing as far as I'm aware, that isn't causing any issues.

Diablo 2, I'd check your windows firewall settings (make sure its allowed) and also check port forwarding, as older games may still require it. (Port forwarding is setting up the incoming connections for your applications, most new stuff does this automatically, but older games such as Diablo 2 may require you to manually set these up on the Router)

Facebook and Google doing that is usually a browser related issue more than a bandwidth one. I'd make sure java is fully up to date, make sure you have the right one depending on 32/64 bit as well (although on a 64 bit system, you'll usually need both). Try another browser as well.

As for speedtest, well, its my worst nightmare. I used to work for a tier 2 ISP, with customers regularly using speedtest to "prove" bandwidth. Its an accurate test, but not perfect. My understand is that it just chucks packets down your link and calculates your bandwidth. Emphasis on the word "calculates". Always remember with networks, latency is not the same as bandwidth. You could rock an 8mb connection and get better ping than others, although, traffic on more expensive stuff is usually prioritized, but meh, its a long subject.

Personally I don't think the problems you were saying are linked, not from what you posted.

If you're still having problems, give us some specifics, most importantly, stuff that has changed.
e.g. diablo 2 isn't working. Ok, new RAM and drives; have you formatted the comp for these? If not, is it a fresh diablo 2 install, etc.

THis scared me with its talk of allowing me to connect on a shared connection on another computer. so clicking Settings gave me this, with both those items ticked.

I have unticked both as you can see and pressed ok and now pictures seem to load properly in the browser and I can see games in Diablo! Still have no clue what that connection is, the figures on it still fluctuate as if its downloading something and I cant find any way to diassble it. Can anyone shed any light? is it a virus or something dodgy? Why the xbox is showing on thee is beyond me as like all devices in the house, its wirelessly linked to the router not the pc.

Arty its a fresh install, fully formated the hd .windows firewall is disabled - I always do this and rely on the routers built in one. As i said above, unticking the xbox and blizard downloader boxes in the last pic seems to have sorted it out.

Thats really weird, I'll have to have a look into it.

Don't disable it for now, I'll do a google when I get home :) I think your internet will die if you disable it.

I cant disable it - the button clicks but nothing happens mate. Though just unticking those 2 boxes have restored my net to full power so to speak. Images loading properly and lots of games appearing in the diablo join list.

Drop XP. Get win 7 as soon as. Given there are no longer any updates for XP, your risk to attack from the net will increase as support for the platform from security products decreases.

The XBOX runs a media server. Its nothing to worry about :) you can have the xbox stream stuff from the PC (requires a bit more stuff setting up) but its clearly got some kind of sharing set up.

Id only worry about that if i can see it on your external link... then you worry.

It would have to be a dodgy copy of win 7 at best. Would it work with only 4 gig of ram though? Thought you needed 6?

I've been rocking win 7 on 4gb of ram absolutely fine. It would work with 2 as well tbh. Just turn aero stuff off and you'll be fine!

Windows 7 is much better on ram than XP or Vista, I upgraded a laptop previously running Vista for someone, it was running like a pig with 1GB of ram. Windows 7 was much more usable on it. Still, I run mine with 16GB :D

I concur with win 7 being better, sadly doesn't apply to 8 but your mileage may vary.

The 2 connections thingie may be IP 6 (I'm guessing as the first number in the ip address is greater than 254 which is the ip 4 limit). I usually disable IP6 as a matter of course as most people are too afraid to switch to it so maybe just disable that connection rather than delete it in case your isp is brave and has done the switch.

If I press the disable button it " clicks" so to speak but still keeps running. Seeing if any mates have a moody copy of windows 7 as I don't trust the ones on kickasstorrents.

Have you setup some sort of connection sharing ? Nintendo USB used to do that so you could use your pc to connect DS games to the internetz. Maybe some other program that's still running is using it for some reason.
