Brian Clough's goalscoring record

Following on from the "all time greatest" thread, Brian Clough seems to me to be the ultimate striker based on goals per game. His record stands at:

For Middlesborough he got 197 league goals in just 213 games

his total career record is 251 goals in just 274 games

Surely that has to be the best ever? Anyone know of a player with a bigger goals to game average?

Pel's statistics are staggering. During his career he scored 1,280 goals in 1,360 games, second only to another Brazilian, Arthur Friedenreich, who recorded 1,329 goals. He scored an average of a goal in every international game he played--the equivalent of a baseball player's hitting a home run in every World Series game over 15 years.

At the club level he shattered records in Brazil. He scored 127 goals for Santos F.C. in 1959, 110 in 1961 and 101 goals in 1965, and led the club to two World Club championships.

Pel also holds the world record for hat tricks (92) and the number of goals scored on the international level (97).

0.91 to 0.94 both records are amazing tbh

What's Pele's management record, though? Cloughie has a godlike record here, too (leading Nott Forest to the European Cup twice). FFS, he even won the league with Derby County !

Cloughies European achievment is all the greater when you consider the bunch of arse-end-of-the-divisions talent, aged warhorses and callow youth he did it with too.

Most of his goals were in the lower divisions tho and not the top flight. He never really proved it at the top level (only 2 England caps) pity a leg break in those days meant end of career.

He totally screwed Leeds over, but thats another story.

If you actualy do some investigating, the Leeds players at the time, Don Revie players to a man, refused to " play ball" with Cloughy and acted like a bunch of prima donnas. It was the players led by Bremner that screwed Leeds, not Cloughie. If they had acted like they should, who knows what euro glory they might have had at the time. ( Look at his subsequent record with Forest).

Oh and Most of his goals were scored in old division 2 - not that "lower league" really as it was the "then" version of the Championship!

I have done all the investigating I need to do. Lifelong fan, read all the books on Clough, watched all the TV where he's discussed his time at Leeds, virtually every Leeds Utd player's autobiography's from the 70's, watched numerous documentaries about Leeds in the 70's and listened to my Dad who went to virtually every Leeds game played for 40+ years. I am coming with a little knowledge on the subject.

First Clough has systematically criticized Leeds for a number of years previous to joining them as manager. Not only had he branded them cheats, but individually called members of the team cheaters, dirty bastards and talent less. He always disagreed with how Leeds played the game and was not backward in expressing this opinion.

Don Revie recommended Johnny Giles as his successor, but for reasons that will probably never be fully understood, the board chose Brian Clough. He arrived at Leeds and immediately alienated the majority of the players who were told that they had only won their medals because of their cheating. He further deepened resentment by selling key players and personalities that were part of such a great club within days of his arrival.

He admitted in his books and in many interviews later on in his life that he made many mistakes at Leeds. Changing things too fast, the way he treated the players at the club, dismissing the whole teams previous achievements didnt go down well with older players, bringing in too many players in key positions (Duncan McKenzie, McGovern and O'Hare) who were just not good enough.

I dont really blame Clough; I blame the board for hiring such an inappropriate person.

No idea why Clough took the job of a club he so clearly disliked and hated.

And yes anything outside the top flight is lower leagues.

Dont change the fact that if the Leeds prima donnas had acted like professionals and did what they were being payed for, Cloughie wouldnt be the scapegoat. They had the chance to work for a genius and blew it imo.

Pele's record dosent realy count as so many goals are made up by the amount of exibition matches brazil have played, you'd hardly say one of the harlem globe trotters had fantastic stats. The word iternational is a bit missleading when it comes to brazil,as i think a lot of goals came against brazil vs club sides plus scoring goals in the early usa football league (ie when they had no draws) dosent count for much either

Prima donna's? Your talking about proffesional players, all internationals who had played the game at the top level for along period of time and had won just about everything in the game. When someone pubicly calls you a cheat and a crap player, I am sure you woudn't be overjoyed at him being your new boss?

There are ways to deal with people, man managment of the old pro's. He admitted he got it all totally wrong in regards to this and the Leeds players. This style is all very well with young players and cart horses but when you tell a player with 100 caps, a world cup medal, FA cup medals your a usless cheat who he doesnt respect not sure your going to get 100% from them.

Player power in the end forced him to go. No suprise to him or anyone else. But to blame the players for his total fukup is mind boggling, its the 1st time I ever heard such a version of events. He never blamed the players for his short stay.
