Personally I always have a hardtime with American Rock bands pre 1980. Aside from early Doors before they became to bluesy (and I don't class Simon & Garth as rock) there is very little that does anything for me. I much prefer the British acts from the 60's and 70's. The 80's are fairly forgetable for rock on both sides of the adlantic unless you like that period of glam hair rock. The 90's though I much prefer the rock coming out of America.
Doesn't have much to do with your link, but might make an interesting discussion, or not :p

That's probably why I don't like that era much also why I've never liked the Stones as much as other acts from this side of the Pond (Gimme Shelter aside which is a top 50 song for me).

Not a fan of Clapton.
Actually in contradiction to my first message just realised some of the later 70's 'punk' bands like Blondie, Television and The Ramones were good! It's definatley the Bluesy/Rootsy stuff I don't like much.

See for me, there was some fantastic stuff came out of the 80s. The Thompson Twins, Erasure, New Order - True Faith is near the top of my all time best choons list. The Smiths, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Green Gartside, Deacon Blue, even Haircut 100. Elizabeth Fraser and the beautiful. ephemeral Cocteau Twins. The Icicle Works, Julian Cope. Go West. The Cult, OMD, Heaven 17, Blancmange, Icehouse, New Model Army... you could go on and on, I've barely scratched the surface and not even mentioned Aha, Duran Duran or U2 when they were still relevant.

Sorry I meant rock music in the 80's. There was indeed some great pop music in the 80's, but the rock music wasn't so great. I'll add Talking Heads to your list, great band!
A-Ha are still relevant I believe their new album is currently sitting in the top ten in the charts :)
