DVI or HDMI

Just realised I've ordered my shiney PC and didn't order a monitor cable and from what I can make out it only ships with a VGA one (seriously why are monitor makers shipping such shiny monitors with VGA cables !), so I'm now left wondering which cable to get DVI or HDMI, what's the difference for a PC, does one work better or is it a case of 6 of one, half a dozen of the other ?

And if it's HDMI am I correct still that a Cheap Amazon HDMI cable is all I need as long as the distance is less than 5M ?

TIA

Allegedly they both do the same thing, though HDMI can carry up to 6-channel audio as well as a video signal

HDMI is, as chick says, an AV format rather than just a Video one. that said, some GFX cards dont output sound, even if they are using HDMI (mine technically does... but programs dont expect it, so have a bit of a habit of refusing to accept it as a sound output device).
you need to know what output the card has.
if it has both, and your monitor has both, i'd say use HDMI.

and yes, cheap cable is all you need.

I'll be using a headset for all the sound so not fussed about audio :)

Sexy?
Using DVI for my monitors and a cheapo HDMI under the carpet to my TV/AV set up. Got fed up of the media steamers / xbox / PS3 not supporting formats, crashing etc.

One note about HDMI, if you're running rocksmith then there is some audio lag between you playing the guitar and hearing it which although minor a lot of people complained about it (I play on headphones from the pc so it's fine).

On the plus side it's one less cable to plug in to your monitor. I actually went out and baught a tv with DVI and hdmi so I use that. Refresh rates on tv's are in the 10 milisecond rate now anyway so see no difference in buying a monitor. the tv also has scart so I can use it for PS3, pc and wii (although haven't played that in ages).

I have a feeling HDMI will generally only support up to 1920x1080 so for larger screens (27" 2560x1440 etc) Dual link DVI or DisplayPort is the better option
