From 5 months ago I can offer advice (haven't played since then) and in general the difference is
Goblin = blow things up
Gnome = gadgety gizmo's
Now back then while only some can be made all but two could be traded. The two from memory were
Goblin = mortar launcher, exploding bomb with feet (I forget the real name)
Gnome = death ray, battle chicken
so that's the real choice as such, cos someone else will ask though. What class are you cos that might make you lean to one class more than another (for example tank classes may find gnome more useful as most of the effects are instant while goblin damaging one's take a second or two to actually use)

There wasn't when I was still playing, and I went gnome and made the best gun that there was. Although I have a feeling there is an even better gun that came out which though needed still things to make it, dark ore, or dark metal ... something which meant it would need lots or work to make one. But that wasn't class limited either.

which, from what i remember, looks at being near 1k in terms of materials
(Requires Fiery Core (4), Lava Core (2), Arcanite Bar (6), Delicate Arcanite Converter (2), Thorium Tube (2))
in all honesty, noone uses it because theres much better stuff available in MC anyway, and you pretty much have to be going to MC to get it.
regarding general engineering...
i tend to prefer gnomish, but tbh i dont think it matters much. the main things that engineering is good for are the 'ultra-safe' transporters, and the repair bots. and you can get those for either i think.
i have a feeling that gnomish tends to be items you make once, and use for a long time, whilst goblin is things that tend to be expendable.... but dont hold me to that.
