Farcry 2

I'm starting to think that whist alot of the praise is a little overenthusiastic the developers have done a fantastic job at making something almost new for the FPS genre. Ok it's not entirely new but the way they have put the game together is a bit of a breath of fresh air in comparison to the usual "Walk down corridor shoot monster" or even "walk through forest follow compas arrow shoot monster". THe Open World really is open, as you can cruise around all you want doing nothig much more than finding moving people and shooting them. One of my favorite moments comes from seeing an wnwmy jeep come cruising towards you, pressing C to jump into the gunenry seat blasting the hell out of it, then hooppign back into the Drivers seat and buggering off.

It also seems to suffer from "Too-hard-at-the-start-itus" along with S.T.A.L.K.E.R and other survival FPS games. They need to make ammo more obvious to begin with - possibly with big flashing arrows in the tutorial section, and possibly give the bad guys a bit less Camo. Hawian shirts would work.... Giving out some kind of better starting weapon allowing you to, just about, hit a barn door would make a great difference too, as once you start buying som decent guns and upgrading your accuracy things become alot more fun.

Oh, has anyone mentioned the graphics? They are utterly stunning. Some of the scenes are awe striking; The sun peaking through dawn mist over a river / canyon as the forest around you burns from one two many miss-timed RPG's. Enemies standing there silouetted against the dawn as you pick them off one by one with a Sniper Rifle.

But, as has been said, it's repetative mission structure, flawed respawns (Patchable easily though) and other factors of generally sloppy game design mean it Can be rather annoying if you let it be. It's IMO worth more than a 30 minute poke but wether or not it's worth 40 quid i am yet to decide.

A scoped rifle seems to make short work of enemies by the way - no need for trainers. I'm looking forward to getting the MP5-SD unlocked tonight. I believe they go in your pistol shot, giving a nice SMG/Sniper/RocketLauncher combination of weapons for all the family's Entertainment.

i was looking forward to getting a few weapons unlocked (like the m16 lookalike, the AS50, the rotary grenade launcher, etc) but it appears that theres a limit on how many gunshop missions you can do before you progress the storyline - which was irritating, as its meant i havnt changed my weapons loadout much since about the 3rd mission...

that said, my loadout rocks. gotta love the m79 grenade launcher (with 5 rounds now) taking up the pistol slot :p and spas-12s are just a dream, as always. and for long range work, i have an lmg (though still the shitty one, since like i say, i cant unlock anymore yet...)

what annoys me though, as i think i said earlier, is that the enemies ignore cover. i'm all in favor of having trees and stuff that make it harder to shoot stuff. but when an enemy armed with a pistol can see (and hit) me from 500yards away, while i'm crouched down behind a bush they cant possibly see through, and they didnt see me go in there, it gets a bit silly. camo should work both ways, not just against the player.

i'm very disapointed with the flamethrower. it seems less like a flamer, and more like a (slightly) oversized cigarette lighter held on its side. i was hoping for something that threw burning jellied napalm 30-40yards in a jet... not something that reaches about 5-10 yards from the barrel, and is just a cloud of flamey bits. glad i saved my game just before i spent 20 diamonds on it tbh.

i think we were avoiding mentioning the graphics, as its a farcry game so they were pretty much assumed :p

as regards favorite moments... one of the ambush missions. for these you have to ambush a moving convoy. fair enough. i've done them before with some general gunfights.( which is silly, its an ambush- they should try to escape, not turn around for another go at you. but anyway.) fancied a change. so i just stand there in the middle of the road ahead of it, with a grenade launcher... you can probably guess the rest :D

oh and chick, 40? think i paid 26 from play :p

Strangely i'm more impressed with these graphics than i was FC's. Odd... About teh same level of impressed as i was when Unreal first came out tbh. Maybe my PC jsut has a bit more relative ooomph.

As for the ambushes, yeah, i have found the middle of the road + Rocket launcher works best, though i am loving the Barret Light50 for... well, everything :)
