Firewall - Kerio

Does anyone use Kerio as their firewall?
My IT guy at work swears by it for home use and apparently the free version is ok.

The free version starts as a full version trial, then after 30 days defaults to the basic version if you want to keep using it.

Any of u used or use it?
How does it compare to zonealarm free version?

You can find it here http://www.kerio.com/us/kpf_download.html

Agree with Chick get the updated version as it was subject ot a nasty vulnerability.

How good is it?

Well I dont see it much, either in home use or for a Corporate environment. Its not a big player *but* that doesnt mean its crap. Its probably swapping one for another in capability.

Looking around quickly It looks like the 'Intrusion Detection' system is partly port based - if a website running on port 20000 is blocked with a millenium backdoor response. This is not 'great' and will result in numerous problems. Id be interested to see if ZA handles this url okay too:

http://webmin.com/index6.html

then select the Umin demo.

Try it. If you play with the free version you can get a view as to how good or bad it is.

Im biased. The PfW im running at home is a yet to be released product which I think (and I would say this) will revolutionise the PfW market. I can stop pretty much ANY file based virus, or Network based worm dead without having to fiddle with settings or open ports or basically do anything to it. When I say pretty much any we are talking 98% of all zero second virus' without any kind of AV update.

Oh it kills Spyware dead too ;0) just wish it did the same to spam.

A quick hunt around packetstorm reveales about a dozen explots for Kerio. Not really a good sign for a firewall product. the only one to have more is Checkpoint (oops)

I'd break into Zed's house and nick his. You get the advantage of selling it then and making $$$$$$$

ps. Pix > all

would love to but theres no chance right now of being able to do that. Product is being very carefully controlled from a beta test pov. :-(

Hehe.

Well the retail price is looking to be around 40 per desktop under 100 units so yes its got money making potential.

Pix is okay. But its only a firewall ;0-)

More on Kerio:

1. It integrates (according to the manual) with AVG
2. It seems to suggest it uses SNORT or snort syntax for its IDS system. Which suggests its going to be pure pattern matching - hencethe false positive id'd above.

Im going to grab it and install it on the missus' laptop and have a gander - see what I can find.

K I'll hold off installing then until u tech heads post something more positive :D

I'm happy with ZA tbh, but it was the integration of Kerio with AVG that applealed really.

never heard of kerio, and all this technical stuff confuses me :p
i use zone alarm pro, and it works nicely for me. though i have a feeling i should set my network to 'not trusted' as i have a feeling my housemates comps are completely full of viruses and spyware :p
