Kindle or Kindle Fire?

Righto, the better half has mentioned that she would like a Kindle, so it's either the one with the keyboard or a kindle fire, what is the difference and in all honesty which is better for reading?

I have an Ipad 2 which i think is perfect for it's use and I read lots of books/comics on it, but my missus reads a book a week..

any pointers would be very helpful :)

Well a Kindle is your bog standard reader, which is ideal for books if thats all she wants it for.
Kindle Fire (afaik) is android based, so does alot more, games, internet etc etc.
Think of the kindle fire more akin to the new Nexus 7 tablet.
To be honest, if it was me, I'd get the fire :)

If it's for books then the standard kindle, the e-ink display is a lot easier on the eyes than a backlit screen. iPad or Kindle Fire for browsing, films or music though.

I use my kindle for books although I also have the kindle app on my phone and ipad so I can use them too, plus I prefer to use the ipad in the kitchen if I've got a recipe book or website.

Yes i think she will mainly use it for books, but she does like to use my ipad as well, the difference between the two is 149 for the reader and 159 for the fire! that's why i am in a quandry...

all honesty I really don't know which to get, she wears glasses and doesn't have the best eyesight in the world, so the reader is probably the best bet.

If it's mostly for books then I'd go for the Kindle. I just got my wife the new 69 one as i can't see the keyboard being much use.

If you want a small tablet then the Nexus 7 is supposed to be better than the Fire but, as has been said, it won't be as easy on the eyes for lots of reading.

makes web browsing easier, but I wouldn't use one for web browsing, the keyboard version is the older kindle. I have the newer one without and I don't miss it.

That's the one I'm getting for reading, mainly cos of battery life over my iPad, the touch one I did consider, but for 40 I figure I'm happy to press a button instead :) (Though I am interested to hear just what else the touch offers). Only thing no-one's mentioned is the keyboard one also has a 3g connection, useful if out and about or on hols wanting a new book I guess

Yeah I just have that kindle, came out after the kindle keyboard but before the kindle touch. Never saw the point in a touch screen kindle though....

will have to decide nearer the time, as it's going to be for xmas, 3g is useful but in all honesty it's not that fast, plus i can imagine she might load up books before we do go on trips, ah well we shall see ;-)

ive just got my self a nexus 7 to replace my kindle as i wanted something with a colour display and that could do more that simply read books on, the fire (and fire hd) have a better display, but for all round usefulness the nextus 7 wins.

if it just for reading books the kindle is best however if it for xmas you might want to look at the the new paperwhite kindle as it ment to be very good for people with poor eye sight (i hope to get one for my mother)

Don't forget that it is easy to increase the text size on kindles and the e-ink is better for tired eyes than a backlit screen.

I have an old kindle keyboard, which I love.

I have an old kindle keyboard without 3g and its been a faithful companion since i got it. 3g isnt neccessary with todays tethered phones even though youd never pay for the whispernet downloads there are enough free wifi hotspots out there its unlikely youd ever need a book that badly with no connection at all.

I had heard that some of the new ones have adverts built in which i was none to happy to hear about.

The kindle is useless without light but works in any lighting conditions where its light enough to see and cheap enough that you would be pissed off if it got damaged but not distraught like an ipad.

A kindle is a master at e books. If you need more get a nexus over a fire.

Going for the kindle touch seems the best bet in all honesty, cheers for the help gents :)

Looks great. I wish they would make them waterproof though - I read mine in the bath using a zip-lock sandwich bag type of thing but it's a bit of a pain tbh.

Cheers

Agreed, but bet that version would cost a fortune & be more bulky with a waterproof seal.
