Long Shot - trying nto remember the name of a book from Childhood

This is a real longshot. Read a book as a child about a family living in a big house in the subburbs, seems from memory twas between 1910 and about 1930. I seem to recall that they were American, or possibly Canadian, and the book centered round the day to day activities of the smaller children, noting their little adventures and triumphs. Was mesmerising writing, very simple, not in the kind of stilted "anne of green gables, Pollyanna" style at all and I would love to get a copy/re read it, but strugling to recall the author, title or even the names of the family. Internet searches with so little information has proven fruitless. I am in the process of getting together a little library of the books I loved as a child, Tove Jansson first, currently looking for all the Moomin books on ebay etc.

Does the above flimsy description ring a bell in anyones memory at all?

Went through a moomin phase about 4 years ago and after getting loads of the books from Amazon I went as far as buying a pack with the moomin family figures in them. Moomin Pappa is currently bluetacked to my dashboard :)

The Japanese cartoon version of the Moomins featured gangland violence, guns and drugs.

No idea I'm afraid but this thread has reminded me that I still have my original (1960's) copy of "Around the World with Ant and Bee" :)

No Janie, Thats Arthur Ransome, loved his books since childhood. It was called something similar to "The Wouldbegoods" though it wasnt that, thats an EE Nesbit book iirc. I'm having vague flashbacks that it was Edwardian Boston or the like it was set in.
