its never been a problem for me - i start it up, install a game (say, BF3 or iirc dragon age 2), close it down, play game. 6 months later i start the process again with a different game. maybe its because i give it very short windows of time to produce bugs in :p.
steam otoh makes me start it up every time i want to play a game, which just gets really annoying.
(yes, i'm an antisocial bastard that doesnt have steam running most of the time, as people keep talking to/at me.)

I picked up the GOY edition of Dawn of War 2 yesterday.

Popped the disc in and then had to wait ages & ages until I could actually play the game, due to Steam having to download the game files or something! They were not patch files, but it really reminded me why I bought a console for gaming Grrrrr.

Saying that strat games don't work well on consoles and I like to play World of Tanks on my PC :) The faffing about with pc gaming is annoying though.

think you'll find that depends on how Steam is feeling tbh :p whilst they've moved back away from you buying games in shops that just contained a CD-key for steam (thank god), they do have a habit of having several GB of day-1 patches that steam forces you to DL before you can play single player. its fine for people who have good broadband i guess.
