First thing to say about FoW: with a book like Earth and Steel you find yourself able to reuse models in many different armies. Best thing to do though is pick a single army 'list' and use that as your basis.
I started with what is probably the most costly infantry army : Gepanzerte-SS Panzergrenadiers.
I have:
HQ
1a. Company Command SMG team upgraded to Command Panzerfaust
1b. SDKFZ 251/1 Half track
2a. 2IC Command SMG team upgraded to Command Panzerfaust
2b. SDKFZ 251/1 Half track
3a. 2 X Panzerschreck teams
3b. 1 X SDKFZ 251/1 half track
Combat Platoons
2 losts of. GP SS Panzergrenadier platoon comprised of
1 X Command SMG team upgraded to Panzerfaust SMG team
5 X MG teams
1 X PAnzerfaust SMG team
3 X SDKFZ 251/1 half track
1 X SDKFZ 251/10 half track (AA)
From there I can add any combination of the following:
1. Machine guns : 4X MG 42 with Command SMG team & 3 X SDKFZ 251/1
2. Armoured SS-Anti-tank Gun Platoon : 3 X Pak 40 + Command SMG & 4 X SDKFZ 251/1
3. Schwere SS Panzer platoon : 5 X Tiger 1E
4. Radio Control Tank platoon : 1 X Konigtiger (this is Lehr only option)
5. Jagdpanther platoon : 3 X Jagdpanthers
6. Upto 2 Panzer platoons : 8 Panzer IV's in total.
7. SS-Self-Propelled infantry Gun platoon : 2 X GRille H + Command SMG + OBserver team (needs SDKFZ 251/1 and Kubelwagon)
8. SS Assault gun platoon : 2 X Stug IV
9. Ernst Barkmann warrior (Panther A)
10. Motorised SS-Artillery Battery - 6 X leFH18s with crew + 2 Obs teams (& 2 Kubelwagens) & Command SMG team & Staff team
11. SS-Rocket Launcher Battery : 3 X NW41's + Command SMG team, Obs team with Kubelwagen
12. SS-Panzer Anti-Aricraft gun platoon - 2 X SDKFZ7/1s
Thats the current model list. To build the Gepanzerte SS army you need to decide which of the divisions you want to determine youre usable units. But you need at least 18!! SDKFZ 251's to do it.
From that list I would add:
5 more Panzer IV's
3 more Jagdpanthers
1 more 7/1 AA gun
3 more NW41s
flak 88's
Hummels
Puma's
You can really build some nice combinations and i find it gets very addictive in terms of models.
For models I have a mix of:
1. Battlefront
2. Peter Pig (beautiful Panzer IV's)
3. QFR (probably the 'cheaper end of 15mm)
4. Skytrex - my favourite overall 15mm vehicle maker
5. Forged in battle. Average resin models.
6. lots of �3.50 SDFKZ 251s from Kerr & King simple because its 2 for 1 vs battlefront when you need 18 of them
