Nintendo Reveals Early Details About Revolution

Req's cynical, but ultimately realistic comment highlights a lesson that imo, Nintendo are still to learn. Fiscally, it's not about the games, it's about the marketing. If you market a product well, a large number of people will buy it, and a large number of companies will develop games for your platform. This naturally attracts more people to your product, and you end up with a system with a lot of crap games, and a few decent ones. The PS2 is a case in point, and has completely undermined any faith that I may have had in Sony.

Nintendo need to get their act together and actually put out a decent launch lineup. Imo, they should have mario cart, an SMB, zelda, a decent adult fps, a decent pokemon, and a decent generic sport game out for release. They should probably throw Pokemon and something similar into the mix too. I can't see how they're going to compete if they don't improve their marketing strategy. Most crucial imo is the provision of an fps. They need a flagship game that is going to attract new audiences, most specifically the 18-25 year old bracket (a market Sony have been dominanting since the PSX).
