Suppose that it's not too big a deal but I always enjoyed dumping D2 on the laptop to play offline while away with work. Guess that's not an option for D3.

The objection probably has more to do with the removal of choice - most people would have played online anyway without thinking about it but as soon as they're told they can't play offline it becomes a massive issue.

./agree. its actually more of a problem for me than most people, as my internet is shitty (recently went a month without any, thanks to BT for once more confirming their reputation as 'one of the shittiest companies for customer service in the uk'), but still dont have a huge problem with it. i do wonder if you'll be playing online constantly, or if you just need to go online to authorise the session - i suspect the former, but you never know.

Hmm, although I agree the online only shouldn't be a problem, the fact that we have no choice could be a deal breaker for a few I reckon.

I used to take D2 with me when I worked abroad, to play offline in the hotel room, this would not let me do that

I am dreading D3 being another Duke Nukem after all this hype.

You'd be hard pushed now to find a hotel that didn't have wi-fi wouldn't you ? And my betting is it's easier to monitor what people do than try and monitor what they do offline and then coming online to sell there phat lewtz !

Still think offline mode is a nice thing to have.

I'm also a bit surprised at the 4 player limit that is being talked about, certainly a huge reduction from D2 where having a full party storming through the game was one of the highlights for me. 4 just seems a bit on the bland/normal side for a point-and-click rpg, not what I was expecting really.

I tried to get indignant about this but failed dismally. Yes, I used to play D2 offline on occasion but usually if I wanted to play solo I'd just play online and put a random password on the game.

I guess it's the same old thing, people generally don't want something until they can't have it - then it becomes the most sought-after thing in the world

aye, i cant see me ever really wanting to play offline - not when it requires a seperate hero (and it would, because otherwise people will hack/dupe/copy their chars to their hearts content offline, and then come online to sell stuff.... much like happened in d1 and d2.... ). i'm hardly going to go 'i dont have internet today, lets go play a level 1 character that even if i do get a really awesome item on, i'm never going to be able to show off, and will never play again'.

If I am honest, I only ever even fired up offline when the net or DII servers were down. Any offline game was dumped pretty much as soon as the net/servers were back up so personally it won't matter in the slightest.

I don't imagine if you're playing single player, and your connection drops, it'll just kick you out of the game and say go reboot your router

Online play, well, find me a game that wont drop when the connection drops

I do remember playing DII offline when I first got it to explore it initially and occasionally I would play my offline char when the Blizz servers were being really crap but mostly I have just played my chars online even if mostly solo the past few years.
Its nice to have the option and I also don't see why it should be that difficult to have an offline option but yeah connections are much better/more reliable in most cases and its not a deal breaker to be online only.

ps. I do enjoy doing /players 8 in solo offline games though

Fired up Titan Quest for a Diabloesque fix and really enjoying it ( nearly 6 years behind I know, ) Couldn't get this to run years ago, so thought I'd try again until D3 appears....ordered Immortal Thore to keep me going too
